Hi, I'm new to this forum and also new to all this DAM stuff  having just invested in a Canon DSLR. I'm currently trying to get my head round the excellent information in Peters book and various hardware & software issues & very glad to have found this forum...so hi to all.

One of my problems has already been solved by info on this forum without even needing to post. I've been trying to decide for ages which make of external hard drive to go for and have read various horror stories from Lacie/Maxtor owners on the forums. I've finally decided to stick with Seagate drives which I have used, and trusted, for several years now, and to just do as Peter suggests in one of his posts and get enclosures for the drives. Thanks for solving that headache Peter!

I've gone for a couple of Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320 Gb drives which I've found at the great price of 64.61GBP (dabs.com for any UK members). I plan to use one as an internal and to put the other in my shiny new Vantec Nexstar 3 HDD enclosure which I luckily stumbled across here in the uk - see their website at http://www.vantec.com. They take drives up to 500 gig and also, I believe, have a SATA enclosure in their product line. Compared to many enclosures I've looked at this seems like a well-built and sturdy product, and as the casing is aluminium, should help to dissipate heat pretty well. The biggest bonus is that it's costing nearly half the price of a comparable off the shelf external drive, with the peace of mind of knowing you've got a drive with a 5 year warranty should it all go pear-shaped.

My next problem is which backup software to go for now...but guess I'll need to shoot over to the software forum for this one.

Regards
