Is there an option to download and preserve the original RAW file (NEF in my case) rather than convert to DNG?

Indeed there is. You can prevent DNG Converter from running at all, run it only to verify raws, or run it to convert to DNGs.

Thanks Marc.. I should've looked closer at what I was doing.  I used my D70 for the test download and didn't realize that it was set to JPG and not RAW (my D200 is welded to shoot only RAW!).  Couldn't figure out why it was 'converting' my RAW files to JPGs!!   Undecided   I thought the only RAW option was DNG ('cause I didn't have DNG Conversion checked).
