New Rank and File
«

We have made several improvements to Rank and File that should please all our users:
Fixed some bugs with Rank and File that led to problems running the script
Changed the way that Preserved FileName is written to the file
Offers an option for the writing of a Text Log
The biggest change is the development of Rank and File Lite, a new version of the script that runs much more quickly that the original, although it is missing a few features.
Rank and File Lite does not have the dialog box: it is called from a menu item, and this means that it is a one-step process.
Because it does not have to harvest metadata before opening a dialog box, it runs much faster, particularly for folders with many images.
It writes the Label name to the Keywords File
It writes the Rating Value to the IPTC Urgency Field
It writes the Filename to both the PreservedFilename field, as well as the IPTC Title field
It writes the capture date to the IPTC Date Created Field
It can run in reverse, but only from the IPTC Urgency field.
It does not let the user select a prefix for either the Label or Ratings
It does not write Ratings to Keywords
It does not write a text log
Both scripts can be on the same computer simultaneously. The user can decide which to use.
This is a free upgrade for purchasers of Rank and File. We will be sending it out to past purchasers soon. We will send it out to a small group of current users to test on several machines. Look for a notice in your email soon if you purchased the product.

Any news on the updated rank and file? I purchased it fairly recently and it hasn't worked yet, and quite eager to start

I'm still testing, but let me send you 115 and see if it works for you. Can you email me off-list?

Peter,
Tried R&F Lite. No biggies here, but for my configuration (i.e. CR2/Windows), it doesn't appear to be updating the IPTC Title field or the IPTC Date Created field. I've also noticed that it puts the keyword "Label:" in the keywords field for rated images that have no label associated with them. Everything else seems to work fine including the reverse operation.

Peter,
Do you know if Tom ever got around to looking into the Windows/CR2 problems I mentioned above. If not, let him know I will be more than happy to test for him. Thanks.

I just saw this topic and I didn't realize there is an updated Rank and File, and there is a Rank and File Lite. I have Rank and File, how do I get the updated version and Rank and File Lite?
Thanks

Ed,
Email off list. (alyson at peterkrogh.com) There are still some small issues, but if you want to give it a try, she'll send it to you.

Thanks very much Peter, I can't tell you what a help it has been finally getting all my image files organized! I'm on the fence when it comes to the video's. I seem to understand your technique from reading the book fairly well. Is there anything on the videos that is not covered in the book? Anyway thanks again...

Ed,
The videos go through the workflow step-by-step. The biggest addition to the book is a comprehensive outline of the tools within iView. I go through all kinds of stuff that is not in the book, because the book is not about iView.
If you have a good handle on Bridge/ACR stuff - workflow, ACR functionality, DNG converter, ACR Defaults and presets, as well as iView stuff - view customizations, lightbox functionality, contact sheets and printing, notepad, catalog merging, etc - then it might not be all that useful.
There is a lot there, and I think only a very experienced Bridge/iView user would not get their money's worth.

Peter,
Wow, you just got me off the fence! I would say that IView, is definitely where I loose my grasp on functionality. I follow Bruce Fraser’s book on ACR and yours on Adobe Bridge but for IView I have been winging it. I have even done pretty well with Photoshop CS2 and a lot of other software thanks to a popular online software tutorial service but they do not have a movie set for IView.
Actually, I would love to use Apples Aperture, but it pains me to agree with you that it needs a little more cooking! Once it is able to accomplish what the workflow you created does, I will probably be onboard with it. I switched to the Mac platform about a year and a half ago and I love it. The only wrinkle in that scenario is Lightroom. I have been reading, on this forum, about the quality of the conversions and I am very curious to try it. I haven’t downloaded it yet, as I wanted to get a solid grasp on one workflow first. Once again, thanks for the great information.
