Keep pix at top level?

I seem to recall that Peter suggests keeping one's photo archive at the top level of the drive -- i.e. in the mac "user's" folder. (in docs file )
Is this still a good idea or does it matter? I tend to keep all my docs and files at the top level. Yet, in the apple store recently, I was told that Apple prefers them in user folder.
Any suggestions? Mary

Simplicity is the key here. Sometimes you find people with some of their pictures here, some there, and it's only when you're sorting things out that you realise there are 2 or 3 other places where their pictures have been stashed. So you want as few top level folders and as much clarity as you can.

to clarify...I meant "not" in the users' folder. Hopefully, it doesn't matter, really.
