Bootable Clone

Still new to all this, though I've been following the rules. Question: I want to make a bootable clone. Is it better to partition my new 3T drive and place it on that? Or better to use a smaller drive and take it offsite (seems safer) and then use the extra partition for, say, backing up video files from another computer or making more archives (albeit not offsite) of my photo files. I'm guessing the first is the way to go...i.e. use small drive and extra HD space on 3T for video on 2nd computer. --Mary
