I am a little confused as to how I should name these, I have photos of my own artwork, & I also occasionally photograph other artists work for reference, should I just use the same naming scheme that is detailed in the DAM book for regular photos and rely exclusively on meta data?

Also for meta data, do I type in my name in the author & copyright fields? for when I take photos of other artists work? or should I leave these blank?

And when a family member photographs me next to my art, do I type in their name in the author & copyright fields?

in all these instances, should I just treat these photo types the same as any of my other photos for naming & meta data and rely on keywords & categories to differentiate them?

Hello Sossity,

My advice is to keep it simple, don't place to much information about the image in the filename.
Yes, You can trust on the metadata to organize your collection images.
When could append your initials at the beginning of the photo's made by yourself. For other images use the initals of the photographer.

Metadata:
The author an copyright fields contains information about the photographer who made this particulair photo, it does not say anything about the subject...
Expression Media does have a field 'People' in where you can put names of the persons on the photograph but i believe it is not a standard field.

In the extended IPTC fields ( http://www.iptc.org/goto?help-cs5panels ) you can put information about the subject but they can not be used for organising your files in Expression Media. Maybe in the future..

In the meentime you can organise your images with catalog sets, like the most of us do.

& for photos of others art, what if I do not know the artist or photographers name?

This is an issue we've struggled with mightily.  While our DAM system is multi-user, central asset store, etc., filenames are the foundation upon which our system is built.

My advice: steer clear of as many descriptive elements of your file name as humanly possible.

Filenames are nowhere near as flexible as metadata fields (Can't use certain characters, length restrictions).. you can't structure and accurately enforce constraints upon your naming scheme (usually, some DAM systems allow this during ingestion).

As for the authorship issue, strictly speaking: whomever takes the photograph is the maker of said photograph, and the copyright holder.

Good luck!
