Capture One trumps LR and ACR?

Tonight I was converting some CR2 files to DNG using the Adobe DNG Converter. One of the files yielded an "unexpected end of file" error and wasnt converted.

Sure enough ACR and Lightroom had a similar problem rendering the file, but, Capture One was not only able to render the file but also export a perfectly fine tiff file. Now Im not terribly concerned about this but am curious as to why one program doesnt have a problem with a file when two others (3 if you count Quick Look in Leopard) do.

Does this suggest the file could be repaired in any way so as to make it readable by ACR and Lightroom?

Hi,

This is where back ups come into play! There's little chance of recovery but I have read of clever engineers repairing NEFs when they were reported as corrupted.

The CR2 has been modified somewhere along your workflow. Most likely when (if) you embedded metadata.  Proprietary raw files are decoded by third-party software vendors to the best of their ability. If data is not where iot's expected to be the software rejects it as "corrupted".

You should contact Adobe and let them know your experince. They may be interested in trying the CR2 themselves.

Some apps are more sensitive to changes in raw files than others. I found Bibble to be the most robust.
