Hello everybody!
As this is my first post on this forum I'd like to introduce myself. I'm a 20-something polish hobby photographer who is trying to organize his mess of photos. As I didn't yet really started, I'd like to get the most "right" before I begin (a couple of weeks/months delay won't bother, so I have time to figure everything out the way I want to). I licensed IDImager and read Peter's book as well as the IDImager workbook (didn't finish this one yet).
I have already read some posts here and find the answers always very helpful.
To my first question:
I'm thinking about a naming convention.
What I came up with so far is the following:
20100215_KAST_PLWAW_3D_r056723e4.CRW
To decode:
- YYYYMMDD - obvious
- KAST - initials (two letters of first and last names - find it more readable that way)
- PLWAW - PL - country of shot and WAW - three letter code of the airport in the city (if not available, another "code" used).
- 3D - camer code. This one stands for Canon 300D
- r - Roll - indicated a film (Canon 300D is obviously a digital, so the name is a fake, but let's not bother with that one). "s" would mean slides, "m" medium format etc.
- 0567 - roll number (attached by the lab), in case of digital, the sequence number.
- 23 - frame number on that roll (skipped in case of digital)
- e - Edited version. Other possible meanings would be m for master files, b for black and white. Didn't give that one much thought yet.
- 4 - the fourth edited version
I think its not bad, and it respects the 32 characters limit!
I'm thinking about dropping the name, or maybe just leaving the country. As this information is somehow redundant with the cataloguu. I thought about this system before being introduced to the ingenious bucket system, and wanted to preserve as many infos in the filename as possible. But that's another story.
Anyhow, first of all any questions and comments are welcome. In general, I'd like to know what you think about that one.
And finally my question: I often shoot with my girlfriend, we swap cameras etc. So the initials become a problem. I have a field in IDI that pops up during import and asks what initials to insert, but... to get it right, I'd need to think about this for every photo we make. And to change the name of every photo just to meet the initials doesn't make sense. So my two options would be:
- drop the initials
- use both our initials - XXYY, XX being my GF and YY being me
What do you think? Do I miss another possibility?
