DNG - Extract processing data?

Hi,
I am a recent convert to the DAM theory after reading Peter's book. With regards to DNG I totally understand the benefits and have now incorporated this into my workflow. I am however exercising caution with the format by embedding the original raw file within the DNG. I know that for any reason I can then extract the raw file but what about the processing data? Is it not possible to also extract an XMP file? Highly unlikely I know but if I wanted to change to another format in a few years time how would I extract this data?
Any thoughts gratefully received.
Thanks,
Ben.

Ben
Let's say you extract the NEF. In Lightroom it's then easy to copy the DNG's processing data over to the NEF.
It's also possible to use exiftool to generate an xmp sidecar.
