iView unstable

My iView (Mac Leopard, iVMP 3.1.3) has become unstable. Unknown operations cause it to shut down with no error reports and sometimes with no operator input. Single catalog, 909 MB and about 26,000 files cataloged.
The only symptom I can repeatedly trace is that iView has renamed in the iView viewer some of the files but they are not renamed in the actual disk files. Therefore iView cannot find the files and the appearance on the screen in the catalog folders panel is that the folders need to be updated. When update is performed, iView crashes, sometimes half way or more through the folder.
I realize there is a problem with iView having to do with maximum catalog size both in the catalog data and the numbers of files. Is it likely that I have reached that limit with only 909 MB of data in the catalog?
Apparently the recommended route to fix this problem, if this is the problem, is to split the catalog along "clean boundaries".
Any further suggestions of other potential causes? Any ideas of best ways to split the catalog when it doesn't even recognize the files that are stored? Any thoughts at all? Also, should I invest in Expression Media now and would it help?
Thanks Much

I have just tried starting a new catalog and importing from the folders that show the problems. It too shuts down. Does that mean that the image files are corrupted? How can I determine that? I also tried a new catalog import from my backup disk for those same folders, with the same result. Or is it possible that iView itself needs reinstalling, and how can one find the suppport to try that?

I have gone back through earlier catalogs up to mid 2009 and find the same behavior except that the file name problems and iView losing the files does not appear in those catalogs. Basically, I can't keep iView open.
Help?

I found the dmg installer for IVMP 3.1.1, changed the old app to OLD_..., installed the application, opened the current catalog, and tried updating the folders that indicate the need, and iView crashes again. The entire folder of derivative files looks good in Bridge, previews render, file sizes appropriate, etc. Opened a few for checking, but it is not a bit by bit check. I did look at the previews (not thumbnails) for each file in the folder, and file info, in Bridge and no apparent problems. Is it fair to conclude that it is not the files, it is not the application, an therefore must be the folder itself? But I tried (previous post) new folders and that did not work either. OSX problem???

Chuck,
Try making a new user account and see if the problem persists if you sign in on that account. Sometimes the problem is a corrupted preference.
Other than that, is the crashing happening with older TIFF or Photoshop files?
