Hi Marc,
Using II 3.2.04 on WinXP Sp3, along with Lightroom 2.3.
I just got an Oly E30 and have been trying, unsuccessfully, to add GPS location in the ingestion process.  To the best of my knowledge, I'm using the identical process that has worked successfully for me on my old Oly E500.
I captured a log file that seems to indicate that II successfully identified the coordinates from my GPX file and worte them into the EXIF.  However, Lightroom can't see them, and I don't see them in the ingested Raw file using ExifGui.
Has anyone else had problems with this on an E30?  Do you have any other suggestions?  I can send the log file if it will help.

Thanks,
   Mike Baynes

Mike--

The actual writing into the raw file is done by an external tool called ExifTool.

Try downloading a newer version of the tool (you can google for the website of ExifTool) and then placing it into the folder that contains the ImageIngester executable file.

Thanks for the quick response.  I replaced the version of ExifTool with the latest one I found, which is v7.7.6.0 dated 5/20/09.  No change in behavior.  So I'm guessing that ExifTool must not support this feature on the E30 - bummer.

I certainly can't rule out pilot error.  On the off chance you might see something I'm doing wrong, I've inserted the log of a test ingestion of 9 images that illustrates my problem.

Thanks again for the help,
   -Mike

Mike--

Ask the author of ExifTool about the E30. He's usually extremely responsive to inquiries.

Hi Mike,

I just tried writing EXIF GPS information to E-30 and E-500 ORF images using exiftool 7.77 (but it should be the same with 7.76), and had no problems.  The GPS information was written fine to both images.

My only problem was that LR 2.0 wouldn't open the E-30 ORF's (either before or after writing the GPS coordinates), so I had to update to LR 2.3.  After updating, I could import both the E-30 and E-500 ORF images, and the GPS coordinates I wrote with exiftool came across fine for both images.

So I don't think the problem is with exiftool.  I suspect that something in your workflow has changed.  Try again with an E-500 image and follow the exact same steps for an E-30 image.

I would be the last to rule out bonehead operator error.  I'll run a more controlled experiment tonight.

Thanks for the follow up,

This is an old thread, but I haven't heard from Marc for a while on a resolution.  And I'm still having the issue with GPS tagging.  The files are ingested, but are missing their GPS data.

Marc, if you're out there, is there any progress?   Huh

Thanks,

Peter,
I believe the problem I've been seeing has nothing to do with the GPS device, but for the record, I use a handheld Garmin GPSMap60 Cx.  It outputs a .gpx file which II uses at ingestion time to find the coordinates for each photo.
Also for the record, I don't believe this has anything to do with the specific model of camera.  The latest attempt that I've done seems to indicate that I can ingest in II and tag images correctly as long as I don't invoke II's  thumbnail view.

Thanks,

Mike,
That's an interesting one.
Are you saying that GPS tagging works, unless you first view thumbnails?
Is this repeatable?

Peter,
That seems to be the case.  I'm getting successful tagging without using thumnail views, and inconsistent tagging when trying thumnails first.  I've sent a PM to Marc with more details.  I could post that here later if that would help.  I still can't be certain that IIP is at fault, it could be something peculiar to my ancient hardware, but I'm stumped.

Thanks,
   -Mike
