Greetings -

New to theDamBook, and relatively new to digital photography -- at least the post-processing part.
I've dabbled with Bibble and played with the Pentax Photo browser.  Picked up a Pentax K200D about a year ago.
(Some Galapagos samples here: http://oldwithoutmoney.com/galapagos1/galapagos.htm)

I'd really like to be able to do just three things simply, quickly and painlessly (i.e. - a free or cheap lightweight app, 'ideally avoiding the need to Read much of The Friendly Manual).

1. Load up a directory of Pentax RAW (.pef) files in thumbnails large enough so that I can quickly scan them for potential 'keepers' (typically 0-5 per 100 Sad).

2. Tag the keepers.

3. Have the program copy (not move) the tagged photos to a specified directory.

The app will be used on my Windoze XP box (tho' if there's a Linux program and/or distro that provides a solution, I'm certainly game).
Currently, I'm working on an old-ish Athlon 64 3000+ (1.8 GHz single core) and 1GB of RAM, so less is more -- lightweight is key.

Thanks kindly.

Hi Richard,

Welcome!  A simple, free and lightweight (in terms of CPU resources) program that might meet your needs is FastStone Image Viewer.  I use it for quickly browsing before they are imported into my Lightroom catalogs.  It has a basic tagging feature, and its move and copy features are very convenient.  Best of all, it comes in a portable, "no install" version so you can put it on a USB hard drive or flash drive.    There are other programs, but if its simple that you want, this may be your ticket.  I always have a copy with me.  Its kind of like the Swiss Army Knife of my photo software collection.

Ken -
Thanks very much.  FastStone is what I ended up using.  Light, fast & straightforward
(although the shortcut keys for tagging & selecting all left me somewhat baffled.)
Cheers,
