I was one of the first kids on the block to get the new Canon 40d.....and was ready to use it....
except......ACR and Bridge cannot open the files........What a bummer to get a new cam, but not
be able to use it.  I wonder how long this process takes, waiting for a new update so that 40D files
can be read???

Brian,
You should see support for that in the next Camera Raw Update (also Lightroom).  These have historically happened 3-4 times a year.  The last update, 4.1, came June 1.

Hmmm, that just seems counter productive from Adobe, to not be able to use their products on a new camera for several months.
I would think the camera manufacturers would give Adobe advance info. so they could roll out a new ACR etc to correspond with the camera
release.  I have real need for the camera now, so I guess I'll have to learn  Canon's bundled software to try to work with the files to get them
into a place where I can integrate into the regular workflow.  I have to say though, waiting for months for them to put out a new update
is not very cool.

Or is it counter productive of Canon to release a camera with a proprietary raw file format....

Adobe supports a lot of cameras, and can't change the ACR schedule for individual cameras (very much).  They are quite responsive when popular cameras are introduced, but it still takes a while to get the color right for each camera.

I agree that not being able to use a new camera with your favorite software takes away some of the value. (And considering that most of these cameras will be in service for maybe 2 years, pulling 2 months off that time is pretty significant.)

I suggest that letting the camera company know your opinion would be good, but keep something else in mind.  Oftentimes, the firmware for the camera does not get finished until very shortly before release.  Sometimes it's just not possible to get that software released for the first several moths of a camera.

Peter,
Good point.  I forgot that the camera manufacturers are tweaking the firmware even as it goes out the door.
The Canon 40D came loaded with firmware 1.0.3.

Camera Raw 4.2 and Lightroom 1.2 is just out and now supports the 40D and other new cameras - http://blogs.adobe.com/jnack/2007/09/camera_raw_42_lr_12.html
