Hey folks.
I'm here at PMA with the iView people trying to remember exactly what the problems with the Urgency field are.  Dan, or Rick, can you refresh my memory?

As I recall, one issues is the Urgency field not coming through on sync.  Also, Dan's problem was that a Photoshop error occurred when any value was synched back to the Urgency field other than "no value".

Can any body having this problem send me a platform/camera/OS summary, and description of the problem?

Peter,

I'll recap the two iView problems here for easy reference.  Here's two excerpts from earlier threads:

  • I've come across a minor bug with Caption Maker when used after an iView Convert Image Files to JPEG on a DNG preview.  If the iView DNG image has a colored label assigned to it, when you run Caption Maker on the output JPEG, Caption Maker pops up a dialog with the following message, "The file contains file info data which cannot be read and has been ignored".  I still get the captioned output file, but the "Created Date" that I place on the bottom right shows the current date rather than the image capture date.  I have to make sure I remove my colored labels in iView before running Convert Image Files.  Have you experienced this?  Thanks..
  • I just did a little more testing with the Urgency field tonight.  It works one way correctly for JPEG's, that is iView to Bridge (done by adding a color label in iView), but not the other way (done by adding a value directly to the Urgency field in Bridge), and I am doing a sync annotations for import with prefer original.  It doesn't work either direction for DNG's.  Hope that helps

They need to check both Mac and Windows, and both NEF and CR2, as well as DNG's made from these two.

Since both of these problems have to do with colored labels in iView, they may be related.  The first problem actually occurs just opening the DNG in Photoshop after running a Convert Image Files in iView with a colored label on the file, so it doesn't really have anything to do with Caption Maker.

Let me know if you need anymore info.  I'm at work today, so don't have a lot of time, but will check back.

Dan

Peter,

I can not tell you real in depth at the moment, but maybe it is a start.  I am running Widnows/Canon 20D/HP PC/Iview 3.0.1/Not sure the exact version of Bridge, but I think the most recent.

What I was noticing before I got super frustrated and quit was that I could put something in the Urgency field in Iview and then Bridge could not see it or I could put a number in the Urgency Field in Bridge and Iview would not see it.  It seemed that they must be writing the information in two separate places or something, however I don't think that is completely true, becuase I could get one of them to see it from the other application (don't remmeber going from which one to which) about 3% of the time.

Sorry it is not a better description.

Peter - My issues were detailed in this thread.

In short, the problem is that I set the Rank & File script to map ratings to iView labels using the IPTC Urgency field and the labels do not get set in iView.  I am running version 1.0.3.106 (99489) of Bridge on Win XP Pro SP2 using DNG 3.2 files from my Canon 20D.  I was using the latest version of iView available at the time of the posts in January.  I haven't tried it recently, as I saw from posts on the forum that it wasn't corrected.  If you need me to try anything, let me know.

Peter,

I checked iView's site for updates the other day and noticed they had an update (build 429a); however, it is dated February 7th.  I usually make a point to check their site every few weeks, so I don't know how I missed this one.

Anyway, I tested it with the Urgency field and low-and-behold, it works!!  The colored labels came over for the first time.  They must have fixed the problem with this update....very cool!

I tested the Convert Image Files with colored labels followed by Caption Maker in Bridge and it worked too!  The date was correct.  Very nice!

The two problems must have been related.  This has really smoothed out my workflow.  I couldn't be happier.  Now if Tom can just get this R&F problem fixed, I'll be in DAM paradise ;-).

Thanks again,
Dan

There's a new build I was notified of but have not tested.  The release notes indicate some tinkering in this area.  I'll be on the road for the next 12 days, and will get a chance to put it through its paces.

The newest builds (429A Win and 429B Mac) were released a few weeks before PMA where Peter and I were discussing this problem.  If they have fixed the issue then that's great news, but if not then please do let us know, I'll keep an eye on this thread.

Cheers, Phil, iView.

Phil,

Thanks for keeping tabs on this forum.  I think that's really great!

Yes the problems do appear to be fixed.  I've been through the workflow several times now and haven't experienced it again yet.  I will be sure to post here though if I do.

Also this problem was fixed as well http://thedambook.com/smf/index.php?topic=278.new#new.

So far, so good.  Labels are now getting set in iView for the star ratings.  Now, if you could only do something about labels from Bridge.   Cheesy
