I just upgraded to ME from iView and I keep getting this window that pops up telling me that the catalog is Read Only. I've gone and opened each catalog to save a copy and still get the same issue.  This issue becomes very troubling when I try to search across multiple catalogs as this will stop the search (or I have to sit there and click read only).

I'm working on a Xserve (local)  running 10.5 server.

I keep a folder of catalogs in the dock (10.5.5, EM 2.0.1).  I'll see what you describe if I click that folder in the dock and then immediately click a catalog.  EM 2 builds a custom icon for each catalog that shows a tiny representation of the catalog contents (I don't recall iView or EM 1 doing that).  If I click a catalog before all of the icons in the folder are built, I'll get the read only nag.  If I wait just a few seconds to be sure all of the catalog icons are created and displayed I don't get the read only message.  I *think* its showing as read only because another user (the system) is accessing the file to build the thumbnail.  Until that process is complete, the file is considered in use and read only.  Maybe what you're seeing is something similar?

Geoff,
This is likely from the presence of a lock file in the folder with the catalogs. Has the application crashed while the catalog was open?
The file is supposed to be purged when the catalog closes.

Can you open the catalog, save it, close it and then open again without the warning showing up?

This problem vexed me for months. Here is the fix (taken from the M$ EM forum but to save anyone else the trouble):

   1. On the Go menu, click Applications.
   2. Open the Utilities folder.
   3. Double-click Terminal.
   4. Type the following command, and then press ENTER:
      defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
      Note This command is case-sensitive.
   5. Type killall Finder, and then press ENTER.
   6. Locate the folder where you saved the catalog file.
   7. Delete the following temporary file:
      CatalogName.ivc_Number
   8. Double-click the catalog file to open the catalog.
9. Again in terminal:
   defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE
ENTER
10. Then:
killall Finder
ENTER
