DNG previews in Leopard
«
on:

Hi all,
I've recently upgraded to a Macbook Pro and Leopard. When I click on a DNG file in order to see the small thumbnail (or even in Quicklook), my preview looks as though there is no color management going on with the OS. In other words, the preview looks highly saturated. This has also been happening with jpgs that I have created for posting to the web, yet I have embedded the sRGB color profile. When I bring either fo these file types in color managed apps, they appear properly. Any thoughts?

Yes you're correct. No colour-management is being used by Finder et. al. when displaying thumbnails of images.

Hmmm, but shouldn't I be able to at least see the correct DNG preview (even if the saturation looks off)? At this point, it looks as though my image adjustments on my DNG files non-existent even though they have embedded jpg previews.
Thanks.

Have you updated the previews in the DNG files?
Note that LR doesn't update the previews with the same frequency that ACR does. Doing so would slow it down considerably.
Even DNGs exported from LR can have out-of-date previews (although I haven't been able to reproduce that particular bug lately).

Yes, it's strange. Even when I update the DNG preview in ACR and close the file, I immediately lose the preview in Finder. The image just looks like it did coming out of the camera even though I've made it a BW etc... If I open up the file however, the image appears as it should.
Thanks,
Lucas

As far as I'm aware, Preview and QuickLook depend on the OS-level RAW support to show DNG files, and don't do anything with embedded JPEG previews.

I see, but I didn't have this issue before changing my machine and therefore upgrading to Leopard. Could Preview and Quicktime have gone backwards in Leopard?
Thanks,
Lucas

Lucas,
Apple may think of this as going forward - enabling on-the-fly DNG decoding (and then maybe use of a robust cache of the decoded files).
I'm finding that people who write Parametric Image Editing Software (PIEware) are very resistant to giving users access to PIEware work done in other applications, even when the implementation is not difficult from an engineering standpoint (as DNG preview implementation would be).
This will change, eventually.

Thanks Peter,
I suppose that answers it then. Such a shame as I adore the quick look feature in Leopard when none of my cataloguing software is open, but this has made it all but useless for my needs.
Cheers,
Lucas
