Peter,

On second thought, I don't think that approach is going to work afterall.  Eventually every catalog would get touched and the backup would become too big.  I see the dilemma.

If maintaining a history is important to you (and it may not be), I would probably try to define what my currently active catalogs are, and only do the incremental on those.  I would not change your backup plan for the others.
