Drive not formatted?

I'm using Bounceback for backup of both my OS and all photo related files, catalogs etc. Two days ago I sat down at the computer to start work and noticed that BB was continually working in the background, after doing some checking, the drive used for backup(1tb Maxtor external) was showing up as
Not Formatted
any attempt to get at the data on the drive was futile. I grudgingly and nervously went forward with formatting the drive and of course erasing any data that was there.
I have a support ticket started with BB about its creating empty folders on the backup drive such as _02485_ and .tmp which may have something to do with it. Also, RegCure had run not long before this happened, could RegCure have wiped out the formatting on the drive?
Maybe someone has had a similar case or a idea of why a drive would suddenly be unformatted. The backup drive is brand new so age isn't a factor.

Rob,
I would consider that to be a very strong caution against trusting this drive. You might want to contact Maxtor and ask them what they think. If it were me, I would have immediately backed up the data to another drive, and tried to figure out what was up with the Maxtor before reformatting, since that will likely wipe away to ability to diagnose the problem.

Because the drive was less than a week old I took it back and told them "No Thank You". The stores policy is if theres a problem within 14 days they handle it, after that it's up to the Mfr.
I now have a WD drive and it's working just fine, all is backed up.
