Hello,

Until today I have always added initials between the date and the unique number of my picture like 20080118_FD_1234.CR2 to indicate who took the picture.  I only add a prefix for pictures coming from other photographers, so my own pictures will always look like 20080118_1234.CR2

But the dambook suggests to use the initials as prefix, at the beginning of the filename (FD_20080118_1234.CR2).  Is there a good reason to do like this?  I am reorganising my pictures (+/- 200GB) and would like to take this into account.

Thank you,
Fabian

Though I am relatively unfamiliar with this my educated guess would be for quick recognition. We'll see how far off or on I am soon I'm sure.

I use one prepend for all of my personally generated stuff (my photos, scans of my drawings, photos taken of my paintings), and a separate prepend for everything that is 'non-me' (images pulled from the web, scans of other people's works and illustrations):

wcs_080123_001_org.jpg  (org=original, and I will modify, ex: _drv, or _Mstr (Photoshop master))

var_080123_005_info.jpg  (info= I might add a word here, like vangogh; the core of the title is var_date_num)

I've found this is easy for me to read (1- it's mine or not, 2- date-number of the photo).

I also use a separate catalog for my stuff (wcs_) and another for not-me stuff (var_).

Fabian,
I like to use my name first so it shows up in order within collections that are not mine (such as my clients'). I want it to be obvious where the picture came from.

Since it's attached to every image, it does not bollix up chronological order within my own collection.

I can imagine that in an environment where more photographers are active it's an added benefit to start the filename with the initials of the photographer.

I shoot most of the pictures my self so I think it's not a wise descision to put too much weight on the initials by using the initials as prefix.  So I will add the initials as 20080118_KROGH_1234.CR2 and only use initials if pictures are not coming from myself.  It's just a matter of taste and luckily it has no negative implications.

Fabian are you adding manually on each image? Or is this an automated feature within Bridge? If so I am unaware of this option.

Edit: I just noticed in another thread that Peter has suggested iView/Expressions. Is this what you are using? Or can this be done in Bridge/CS2?

In Bridge's Batch Rename you can choose the Metadata option and then Creator becomes available for use in the new name. But it reads whatever is in the field - OK if your name is Krogh but a bit much if you're called Beardsworth or Dierckxsens. So it's easier to use the Text option.

Most of my images are my own, so I don't include my name in the filename. Partly that's also because I can do without the visual clutter of a bunch of letters in the front of the filename or stuck somewhere in the middle. When I send files out, then I do. But I also have a number of images shot by other people and prefix the files with their names.

Ahah, I see the Creator Field, then I can click on the + symbol to add text. This would be the correct rename sequence?
