I recently purchased iView and have had the same problem many other members of the forum have experienced. Crashing on import and image manipulation. I have a Nvidia XFX GeForce 8500 GT video card. Running Quicktime in SafeMode seems to be a good workaround for this problem. However, does anyone know if any new drivers have been released for this video card that alleviate this problem altogether?

Thanks,

I am a brand new user & new to this forum.  Just bought iView at Fry's, without trying the demo & am thinking I made a mistake now.
iView crashes in about 1 second after loading any pic on it.
I have the same problem as yours apparently, but with a GF 8400GS Card.   I tried loading the latest driver from xfxforce.com (took a half hour) and still get the same problem.

I just removed the g-force card from my pc and am running on the built in video on my Asus MB.
iView seems to be working now.

Guess I'll try to contact xfxforce & see if I get anywhere there.
Any suggestions on how to fix this from anyone?

thanks,

Ron,
I think Apple needs to fix this with a  quicktime update.

Ron:

I have been running Quicktime in "Safe Mode".  Click on the Quicktime icon, select Edit -> Preferences -> Quicktime Preferences and then click on the Advanced Tab. In the middle of the dialog box is a Video section. There you can check a box for "Safe Mode (GDI Only)".  This has solved my compatibilty problems with the XFX video board.  I too downloaded new drivers from XFX and they did not solve the problem. Running Quicktime in Safemode has not caused any problems for iTunes (which is the only other software I have that uses Quicktime).

As a new iView customer, you should be entitled to upgrade for free to Expression Media. I just purchased iView from Phase One for $99 and they gave me a free upgrade. This will not help the Quicktime problem, but, it will enable you to upgrade to Expression Media 2.0 (which is currently available from Microsoft as a Beta test version for free). The advantage of EM 2.0 is that it apparently does not require Quicktime. I have yet to test it out on my system.

Don't despair... I don't think you have made a mistake in purchasing this software. iView is a powerful package, but it does take some time to figure out all that it can do. Fortunately, there is a lot of GREAT support available for it from the users and moderators of this forum.

Hi Adam,
Thanks for the info.  I'll reinstall the GForce board and give the Quicktime safe mode a try.
By the way, I paid $200 for iView Media Pro3 at Frys.  Not a good move on my part apparently.
I'm not anxious to try the EM version yet.  I'll fool around with what I have loaded for a while first, I think.

I did just get a reply from an XFXforce tech.
I think I have actually already done most of what they say below, all except doing the "driver cleaning" part.
I have a nearly new complete XP install, so that does not sound to promising.
Here is what they said to do (I'm not sure it is worth trying, but at least they did reply):

[CURTIS - 03/12/2008] Is iView Media the only application that has this issue? This may be a corrupted driver issue. Please DL the latest driver from http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp and save them to the desktop. Then download the professional driver cleaner from : http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=745 and install the cleaner. Uninstall the current video drivers through the add/remove programs utility in the control panel. Reboot into safe mode by pressing F8 repeatedly after the POST screen but before windows loads. Use the driver cleaner to clean only the NVIDIA and ATI(if present) drivers and repeat this step a few times to completely clean the drivers out. Install the latest drivers from the desktop and reboot into windows normally. Also, please make sure that you have the latest motherboard updates such as chipset drivers and BIOS. Curtis

Hi again Adam,
I tried it and it works.
I put the 8400 card back in and set the quicktime pref as you suggested.
I also just downloaded the EM version from Microsoft, it also crashes & has the same cure.
Many thanks!!

In my testing, the recently released update to Quicktime (7.4.5) fixes the crashing problems I was having with both iView and Expression Media.

Best regards,

FYI:
I still have to go into the new version of QuickTime Player 7.4.5,  edit, preferences. quicktime preferences, advanced  & set the video to safe mode.  It seems to work with that set, or it still crashes.  Iview seems to still show the 8.3 file name limitation.  Microsofts Expression Media seems to work ok, with no file name length issue.
