It’s been along time since I’ve had any problems getting the files from the CF card to the desktop but I would not be posting to the “Loss and Recovery” section if this was just another download.

In the middle of the process the G5 just died. No warning just a black screen and total silence. Once I got the machine restarted I downloaded the card as usual. A few times but this was not going to be a simple. I was a able to get about 35 “good” images while about 85 were a mess. Using ImageRescue and Rescuepro I was able to retrieve a couple more.

The good news is the subject was an executive portrait, I had another card and got enough images to survive but what if this was something important like Britney Spears making out with her pregnant sister.

Are there other ways to get those damaged images? Should I cut my losses, reformat my card and move on? I’m not looking for a companies who specializes in “data recovery” but more what a photographer could do on his own to fix this problem.

Scott,
If you google for it, you can find a number of recovery software packages.  Most of them have  ademo mode that will show you what they can recover - then you pay to unlock it..
