I got caught up in this issue also.  Just what I wanted to deal with on a Monday morning. I should have known to check here before upgrading Quicktime.

My resolution was this:

Uninstall Quicktime 7.4, reboot, run the Quicktime v7.1.3 installer that was archived "just in case".  I just fired up IVMP and it appears that everything is OK and our catalog isn't corrupt.

Besides regular backups of our IVMP catalog, doing a weekly export/sync of metadata back to each file is part of our hedge against the worst case scenario, which I was really nervous about this morning.

I'm running iView Media Pro v3.1.1 on Windows Server 2003, which client workstations connect to via Remote Desktop.

Its odd that when I run the check for the latest Quicktime updates in 7.3.1 is says I have the latest version.  It is 7.3.1 according to the help - about quicktime pull down.  It did ask me if I wanted to upgrade rignt after I installed it however, which I did not.

Perhaps you should accept the upgrade ...

In my experience, the latest version of QuickTime 7.4.1 does work correctly with iView 3.1.3 (as I mentioned in an earlier post on 28 February).

The filename problems mentioned by other posters may only apply to an earlier release of Quicktime 7.4.

Sorry, I should have been more specific.  I tried Quicktime version 7.4.1 and it caused the 8.3 filename issue with my iView 3.1.3 under Windows 2003 Server.

At this point, I starting to consider iView legacy software.  And with legacy software, upgrading dependancies can be a very bad thing.  Lesson learned.  Time to start shopping for another DAM solution.

Mike,
Have you looked at Expression?  Any issues for you?

We're holding off on upgrading to Expression (or any other 'next generation' DAM solution) until it supports read/write from multiple simultaneous users/workstations.  This summer I'll be investigating Portfolio.

Mike,
How many simultaneous users do you have, typically?

No more than three, but typically we would have two people working on our archive of 25k DNG and legacy JPG images.

Just an update to this issue...

I experienced a similar issue - I installed iTunes on my laptop, which updated my version of Quicktime to 7.5.5 and noticed that my catalog name, when opened in iView MP, was being truncated to 8 characters ~1. None of the folder names, however, were truncated, and all my metadata was unaffected.

Upon reading this post and some on the iView user forums, I rolled back my version of Quicktime until it worked. the version that finally displayed the catalog name correctly was 7.3.1. I tried installing 7.4.5 and 7.4.1 but the issue persisted with each of these versions.
FYI - I uninstalled previous versions and restarted before installing another version.

Download other Quicktime releases at http://support.apple.com/downloads/#quicktime

My system: Windows XP Pro / Service Pack 3 / iView Media Pro ver. 3.1.3 build 42E6 / Catalog 12k+ images, 410 mb

Hope this helps...

Best,
Jason

Today I experienced the same problem again. A few days ago I built and installed a new pc workstation and decided to install Quicktime 7.6 on it. Today I noticed the 8.3 filename problem. Since I remembered having it a while ago, I searched the forum and found this thread. Strange how an old bug seems to return.....

Hi Hans,

Are you using iView? If yes stick to QT7.3.1, the last version before Apple introduced unicode. If you're on Expression Media 1 make sure you have *all* the updates which includes the "Rollup".

If you have Expression Media 2 you should be safe with current versions of QT, but get the Service Pack anyway.

My advice is unless you need QT7.4+ for other apps (iPhoto, iTunes, etc), or the security issues are a problem stick with QT7.3.1.
