problem with external drive

I just spent a month struggling with iview version 3 quitting and crashing constantly. I run a Mac G4 laptop with the catalog on the laptop and the files on an external.

After endless back and forth to iView and Seagate, I finally bought a brand new Lacie external, 7200 RPM, and now iView works perfectly.

To be honest, iView tried to be helpful, but just kept talking about deleting my prefs and updating Quicktime, but I am running a fully up-to-date system, and deleted prefs, re-installed iView many times.

There appears to be nothing wrong with the Seagate, but it simply won't work with iView.

(I sent crash reports to Seagate that contain multiple references to OS X, and they emailed me back asking which version of Windows I am running.)
