All -

I'm an amateur and moving from the PC world to Mac.  My PC workflow was basically Downloader Pro -> CaptureNX (Raw) -> PSCS.  My directory structure was by subject; apparently a common pitfall.  No keywording or metadata was ever added and I've never used a cataloging program.  With the exception of vacations, I don't take many photos at once but rather a few photos of many things spread over time.  I shoot most Raw+JPEG with my D200, and JPEGs with Canon P&S cameras; about 3000 images.

After years with an inadequate workflow, I'm attempting to mend my ways.  I would appreciate suggestions on tool selection for my new Macbook.  I'm in the process of reading Peter's book and have read many of the posts on this site but have not found what I think would best for me and my low volume of photos.

I feel certain I will purchase PSCS3 and I've downloaded the trail versions of Photo Mechanic and Lightroom.  I'm not convinced LR is necessary.  LR has a nice interface but  I find it cumbersome.  I've downloaded, but have not used, ImageIngester.

To get this right, what tools do I need and in what order should I purchase them?

Thank you for your help.

Michael

Michael,
I'd suggest trying iView/Expression for management.  If you said that you loved Lightroom,  would have suggested that you just use that.

I think CS3 is totally worth the money.

Once you decide on a DAM solution, other parts of the purchase may become clearer.

Thanks Peter.  I don't know enough about LR to really dislike it.  It just seems to have a steep learning curve.  I thought I would understand how it worked because of my experience in Photoshop.  Wrong but nothing that can't be overcome.  I've also read your messages concerning LR's current lack of features.

What I've not figured out yet is how to handle the LR catalog/library.  Because I work on a laptop, not all my photos/media will be on-line.  Usually only the working copies.  Everything else is on an external drive and/or DVD.

I'll get PSCS3 first.
