With the latest version of Bridge, you can place a brackets around a keyword and that keyword will not be written to a file if you select a nested (child) keyword for writing to a file.  The keyword with brackets acts as a name for the group of keywords nested under it.  I tried this in Lightroom, but it does not work. Will some other character do the same for a keyword in Lightroom?

Not that way AFAIK. You have to edit the keyword and untick the export setting.

Thanks John.

I remember that setting now and remember wondering if it affected the children.  I'll check it out this weekend.  In Bridge you can set a keyword not to embed by editing the program's keyword text file.  I'll have to see if Lightroom's keyword text file stores the "no export" setting.

Update on Lightroom's exporting keywords to files - best shown with two examples:

Ex. 1

Ratings            (keyword property 'Include on Export' unchecked)
1Star                  (1st level child keyword property 'Export Parents' checked)

Result when a 1st level child keyword is added to a file's keywords:
Top level keyword's property 'Include on Export' being unchecked is overridden by the 1st level child's properties - the top level keyword is exported but it appears in quotation marks.

Ex. 2

Ratings            (keyword property 'Include on Export' unchecked)
1Star                (1st level child keyword property 'Export Parents' checked)
MP: 1Star               (2nd level child keyword property 'Export Parents' checked)

Result when 2nd level child keyword is added to a files keywords:
Top level keyword's property 'Include on Export' being unchecked is honored - only the 1st and 2nd level child keywords are exported.

The above example makes me wonder why 'Export Parents' is plural unless you have the same child keyword under more than one parent then both parents are be exported when assigning just one of the child keywords.

I tend to do most of the editing to my keywords in Bridge.  I looks like if I import the keywords from Bridge into LR (text files), you have to manually uncheck 'Export Parents' for the 1st level child in the LR keyword panel if you do not want the parent exported even though the parent's properties contradict this.  Not good if want to update fairly often.

A side note, the text file of LR's keywords does not seem to reflect the 'Export Parents' setting - it must be stored elsewhere.
