So i took someone's advice and am importing my RAW files first into LR, making minor adjustments, adding metadata, exporting as DNG and then importing and cataloguing in IVMP.  However the files are coming in without showing any applied metadata and they are all oriented differently.  Some are rotated 180 and some are even flipped horizontally, some are both!  If i open the file in Camera RAW things look normal and metadata is there.  However when i open the DNG in Camera Raw and if i choose from the menu "Update DNG previews" and then rebuild the file in IVMP, the file is oriented correctly but the metadata is still missing.  BUT the metadata is there when viewed in File Info in PS.

As i am feeling very overwhelmed by all this I am suddenly uncertain how to view a DNG in Camera RAW and be certain that i am seeing only the changes i've applied in LR and not any current settings.  Does the preview checkbox unchecked show the original file pre-LR adjustments or is that preview box showing all changes made to the file before being brought into Camera RAW?

Please help if you can! Shocked Huh

Are you:
Importing Raw into Lightroom
Make adjustments
Export as DNG
Import into iView

If so, you should see the files in iView as they appeared in Lightroom.

Can you try that sequence on a test file and see if it works properly?

Peter, that's exactly what i did.  Out of the camera into LR, made changes, added metadata, exported as DNG to new folder, updated said folder in IVMP so files would import.  The one thing i didn't mention is that the thumbnails after updating the folder did not have an image, they were blank.  But when i rebuilt them the image appeared but flipped and not rotated properly, metadata missing.

Lauren,
Can you do the steps exactly as I laid them out with new files into a new catalog and tell me what you see.
(You seem to be reimporting, which may be part of the cause of your problems.)

I'm not clear on where you think i'm reimporting to.  But i just created a new catalogue in LR, imported the same RAW files off the card, added metadata, rotated, exported as DNG with full size preview, imported into new catalog in IVMP.  This time the metadata was there, nothing was flipped BUT they were rotated 180.

Lauren,
What kind of files were they?
Did Lightroom see the proper rotation, or did you have to manually roatate?

These are .RAF files out of my point and shoot Fuji FinePix E900.  I had to rotate these.  Maybe it is files from this camera only as I have done the same with files from a Fuji S5 and did not encounter this.  What do you think?

Lauren,
If you don't rotate them in Lightroom and make the DNGs, does iView see them with the proper rotation?
It may be that Lightroom is not seeing the camera's  rotation tag, but iView sees it and the one created by Lightroom.

This camera doesn't recognize when the camera has been rotated.  And that doesn't explain why they were flipped (right to left flip) nor why the metadata is not showing in IVMP but is clearly in the file.

Huh

Lauren,
So the behavior you see is
• The camera has no internal rotation indicator, so no program sees that the images are vertical.
• They show in Lightroom, iView and in the finder as on their side when Verticals are first imported.
• If you rotate in Lightroom, Lightroom sees them as properly oriented, but both iView and the Finder see them improperly rotated.

Is that right?

Right!  But also IVMP sees/saw them flipped and without metadata.

Lauren,
Can you please be more precise.
Your statement seems to contradict my bullet number 2.

Does "without metadata" mean "before being touched by Lightroom" or something else.

Sorry for not being clearer and thanks for trying to figure it out.

Right!  But also IVMP sees/saw them flipped and without metadata.
My above statement doesn't contradict your second point as it refers to what happens AFTER work is done on the files in LR.  I'm not seeing them in iView when they are first imported as i don't bring them into there until everything is completed in LR.

Does "without metadata" mean "before being touched by Lightroom" or something else.
It means AFTER work done on the files in LR.  Following advice i was given in another thread i'm not importing into iView until all work is done in LR (converting to DNG, adding metadata, rating, etc.)

Hope i'm clearer now.  Thanks!

Laurne,
Not clearer at all, I'm afraid.
Can you outline what you see in a series of short clear, declaritive sentences.

Without metadata  = having been worked on in Lighroom.

I'm totally lost.
