Just wondering if anyone has tried iView on Leopard.

What are the chances MS would fix any incompatibilities with Leopard if they were minor?

Mark,
Fixing iView for Leopard compatibility?  I'd say pretty close to impossible.

Thanks, maybe it will work as is - a number of reports of programs working fine with Leopard.

Are you saying iView will not work with Leopard, now or in the future? What about Expression Media?

Thanks,

Andrew

I think he means that MS would only update what it calls "Expression Media". It would not go back and update an old version (iView) because it has begun a new chapter.
However, iView will probably work fine for at least the next whole year (if not longer).

I'm not sure I follow. If they aren't going to upgrade it to work with Leopard, how will it work fine for a year or more? You mean as long as you don't upgrade your OS, or buy a new Mac for another year, it will work fine?

Thanks,

Andrew

Andrew,
Let's not jump to conclusions.
Perhaps there's something in Leopard that breaks iView, but more likely not.
We'll see pretty soon.

Hi Peter,

I guess I was inferring from your statement above that there was something that needed to be fixed.

Hopefully someone will be able to give us a definite answer soon. I was thinking about going to buy a copy of Leopard yesterday, but then I started reading about lots of compatibility issues with various applications and devices. I was hoping I left all this stuff behind with my Windoze machines, but I guess Mac has a some of the same issues.

Cheers,

Andrew

Not knowing much about Apples (not that this will stop me!), I was wondering: if one can run Windows applications on Apples by setting up a Windows session (don't remember the terminology for this), then might iView still be workable under this mode?

The iView I bought was 'unisex'- for both apple and windows. It runs under Vista, so apparently the Windows side functions OK for now. Maybe iView-as-Windows-app running on Mac-as-windows-session is the way to go if there are problems with Leopard?

And: how come Apple gets all the cool names?

There's several ways to run Windows on Macs if the Mac has an Intel processor - I'm probably 2 years from that.  Boot Camp is included in the latest version OSX (Apple's OS) and not practical for a photo workflow (in my opinion) because you shut down OSX to boot into Windows.  However, there are programs that run Windows along side OSX.  For the most part they work very well and are getting better, but the issues I have heard involve USB devices - I am not sure if this is on just some machines and not others.  I haven't retained a whole lot on the subject because my processor is pre-Intel.

MS says they only support the more expensive versions of Vista on Macs. I think that means you can't get updates but not sure.  XP works though.

I don't have Leopard yet (I usually wait for a few dots), but iView has checked out for this guy (from the Apple forum):

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5672318&#5672318
(towards the bottom of page 1)

However, Old Toad has pointed out that there is a an issue with both iView and xMedia. In both when you're in the batch rename window the background of the text windows is the same as the thumbnail view background. If you have a black or dark background it makes using that feature very difficult.

The only workaround at present is to make the thumbnail view background light enough so the black text will display easily. Luckily, since I've been using iView since 1998, I happen to still be using their original color scheme -- with a white background. But obviously this won't be fixed in iView, just the MS version...

Jim,

Thanks. I'm going to take the prudent approach and do an install on a test volume and add updates as they are issued for 10.5.  However, I'll install IV3 before installing any other programs since it's a slim chance of it being updated and I don't want to mess up a system that I have spent a lot of time installing programs on.

I thought I saw on that site where someone reported that DiskWarrior 4 worked.  Using the current DW on a new system is a super big no-no.

I spent the weekend moving two computers to Leopard.  One was a recently purchased used late G5.  The other a 17" G4 Powerbook that was due for an upgraded internal drive.  So each computer received a complete ground up new install of Leopard and all of my apps.  Out of all the programs I've installed, I've only hit one major incompatibility and very few minor ones.  This has been much less painful than any other major Mac OS upgrades (I started at Mac life at System 7).  I immediately ran into the odd text background issue in iView as it affects the serial number entry field.  I've not seen it in any other field since.  I've not tried renaming in iView yet.  I rarely use that feature.  I certainly haven't tested iView thoroughly yet but it seems just fine so far.

The only major snag I hit Leopard was with Launch2Net... a program that allows wireless internet connection via cell phone data networks.  Their site says the current version is "mostly" Leopard compatible and that a new release is forthcoming.   For me it caused a kernel panic crash on each attempt to initialize it. Some of the other software that I'm running, like iView, is not the most recently released version.  Still I've hit no issues that would prevent me from using Leopard.  I would more typically wait a bit before upgrading but both of these computers needed major system installs anyway so it seemed like I might as well go ahead and try.  I'm glad I did.

Wow, if I had know better.....
Read about Leopard in MacWorld.  Did a one hour workshop
on Leopard at the Apple Store.  Installed it... and all hell has broken
loose, including with Expressions Media.  The program freezes, and won't open.
I have to force quit.  And that's just Expressions.  What a train wreck.
14 system crashes in a row.  Yuck.  Should have waited.

Brian,
I just heard from the Expression team. They have only found a minor cosmetic problem with Expression or iView, and are working with Apple to get it straightened out. Other issues that have shown up may be isolated, or unrelated.

Do you still have the installation, or did you roll back to 10.4?
