First of all great book.  It was a very easy read that took less than a day of off and on reading.  However I came away with a few questions.

1)  Should a certain keyword be put into derivative files so you know what they are.  I guess I know that you will be able to tell from the filename, but say you are doing a search and specifically want the derivative.

2)  What should DVD backups be stored in?  A jewel case, spindle, etc.

3)  Is there a certain point that a database is a must.  Basically I have about 10K images right now and I am kind of wanting to wait on investing in catalog software until more about lightroom is known.

Once again thanks for the information it has been great.

John,
1. Keywords from your RAW will follow to the derivatives.  I put a designation on the filename to indicate a master file.  There is less need to even save other derivatives, since they complicate the DAM process, and most can be generated automatically.

Putting a keyword, or custom iView Category into the file to indicate what it was made for is not a bad idea, though, if you feel like it adds something of value.

2. Ideally, they should be stored in total darkness, upright in Jewel cases.  I store mine in darkness, upright in a nootebok.

3. I would say that at 10k, a database would be very helpful.  Are you Mac or PC?  What camera?

Thanks Peter, However I am a little confused on how you store Jewel cases in a notebook.  I also am a PC user who currently shoots a 20D.  I will probably upgrade to the 20D successor if it has 7fps and a better AF system, until I can afford a 1DMkII.

Thanks again,
John

It's either/or.  Notebook OR jewel cases.
