Hi everyone,

Simple  questions I hope.   I am renaming JPEG files in bridge.  I ran a batch rename on a set of files that I had already renamed and I got a (1) after some but not all numbers   What does this (1) indicate?    When I rename something in bridge that is already in my catalog, my catalog does seem to automatically update itself?   I did not have "update folders" checked at the time.  What exactly does it mean when you check  "Update folders" for every minute or every 5 minutes?   I think you said that you should leave it unchecked most of the time. Also, once I run a "batch rename"  can I go to a differnt folder to work on images or does this cause problems?

Any and all help appreciated.

Elsie

I am renaming JPEG files in bridge.  Sometimes it diplays the whole name i.e., Hull_050724_2400 but then there will be images with just the name and number without the date.  Is that normal/OK.

Do you mean that after the renaming operation, some of the files did not get renamed?  That would be curious.  All of the files you selected should have been renamed follwing the settings in the rename dialog box.

I ran a batch rename on a set of files that I had already renamed and I got a (1) after each number.

Why do you do this?  Sounds like risky behavior!

When I rename something in bridge that is already in my catalog does my catalog automatically update itself?

No.  Again, I question why you would rename something in Bridge once you have already cataloged that file in iVIew.

I would suggest that you think through your workflow and try to be as clear is possible about how each file goes through that workflow, then stick to it without exception.  Basically, Peter's suggested workflow for RAW files is:
1. Download/backup RAW files from CF cards.
2. Rename, bulk metadata, rate, label, Camera Raw adjustments in Bridge.
3. Convert to DNG.
4. Archive to hard drive "buckets".
4. Import into iVIew for cataloging, organizing into sets.

If you are shooting all JPEG images in-camera, your workflow will be the same except for the Camera Raw adjustments and the DNG conversion, ...and I would suggest you look into shooting RAW.

Thank you Rick!  Your words most helpful.  I was working on files that I had transfered in Peter's class so they had not gone through the proper work flow.  I will simply delete them, archive them and then import them again into Iview.  Again, many thanks  Elsie

Good idea.  Test your workflow with a small group of images until it is smooth.

As you're finding out, this testing process is where the do's and don't's will be clarified.  When you bump into a wall, back up and try to analyze what happened.  Too many brick walls will bruise your brain, so avoid them whenever possible.
