I photograph a lot of events and weddings, and i use the naming convention as outlined in Peter's book.  The lab I've been using prints the whole filename (msknyc_070812_0123) but I've been having some quality control issues with them, and it looks like it's time to move on.

I can't find another lab that supports long file names, and of course it's the unique file number that gets truncated.   So I am looking for two things.  Is there a way to batch rename selected files to keep only the last four numbers?  Or does anybody have a lab that they use that supports the long file names.

Generally, I give clients 4x6 proofs, and they use the file number for reprints.

Thanx for you help.

Mark,
IView can do this reasonably well (at least when the images have the same shoot date, it's a one-step process).
What applications are you working with?

Peter, thank you for your reply.

I am using IVIEW.  When I get a print order, I have a catalog set with sub terms... i.e.  PRINT ORDER/4x6/1 each ... 2 each.  That way if there's a discrepancy, I can refer back to what I printed.

I have the latest (and last) version of IVIEW running.

Ah HA!

So I imported the JPEGS that I made from the DNGs, and used the "replace text" option to remove the msknyc_070812_.  What an elegant program IVIEW is.  I'm wondering, do other programs have this feature?  Is this something that could be done in LIGHTROOM or PHOTO MECHANIC?  I guess perhaps that's rhetorical as I'm going to go look @ all the programs I have to see if this renaming feature is available elsewhere.

The other great thing about this renaming feature is that it not only leaves the information after what string I'm trying to replace is that if I put information preceeding the "msknyc" it will leave that as well.
