I am getting ready for a trip, and I have an assistant here working on 550 RAW files open in ACR. She  had spent 3
hours  adjusting them, and was 3/4 of the way done.  There was a system freeze which would not respond to anything.
I hit the power button to shut the machine down.  When I restarted, I see all the work she did (at 20$ an hour) is gone.
I am so ticked.  This has happened before.  The system freeze is from opening another machine over the network, at least that's
what I think.  This is such a bummer when this happens, to loose all that work.  So, at what point are all those ajdustments
to RAW files in ACR 'saved' or lost?  If PS crashes, do you loose all that work?  I am just so ticked at the moment.
Thanks for any info.

Brian,

My understanding is that, if using sidecar files, then changes are written to them asap.  If there's a 'bulk' change done then you may see a progress indicator.  Assuming you use sidecar files have a look at some file timestamps.  What I would do is kill the cache for this directory and see what happens.  It is the rebuilding or 'applying' the changes that takes time.

Brian,
Sorry, but the changes are lost unless you hit "done".  At that point, they are written to the sidecar files.

There's something that feels a bit strange about working for several hours in a single session of ACR.  As you have discovered, the information s a bit fragile there - not just because of crashes (which you should be able to track down and tame), but also because you could make a mistake exiting the mode and lose the changes.

I'd suggest doing these adjustments in smaller groups. (Or using RapidFixer, which writes the changes to sidecar immediately).
