Hi folks.

What are your opinions about using people's names as embedded (in the image file) keywords? Is it likely that someone else using the image would actually search for a person's name, as opposed to something about the person, e.g., athlete, dancer, tall, etc.?

Also, do you put kids' names in embedded keywords? Could this lead to problems if the image goes public, e.g., is posted on the Web, and there's a child's name in it? I wonder about this, especially if the parent is the photographer and has put his/her address in the embedded contact information!

Thanks.

I'd only use them if they are well-known people. After all, the keyword Sophie X means nothing to a third party, whereas someone might well search for images of Luciano Pavarotti. You might also factor in whether you're dealing with people you expect to become widely-known - eg a promising 14 year old footballer may be a major star by the age of 22 and there would be legitimate value in having those images keyworded with the name.

Greg,
When framing these questions, it's helpful to outline the purpose.  Anonymous stock search is very different form being discoverable in your own collection.

In prepping images for stock submission, kids names are only one of a number of kinds of metadata that you may wish to remove.

Peter,
Right now the pictures are just for my personal collection, not business. However, I do give the pictures to my kids, their friends, the kids' sports teams, etc. Some I post on picture sharing sites so kids and parents can look at them. I'm sure some also end up on social sites, such as My Space or Face Book. I was just wondering what other people do in situations like these.

Thanks.

Greg,
In this case, I would personally not worry about keeping most of the keyword information in the images.
