I am looking at a low cost batch file renamer, that can perform more sophisticated renaming than iView- such as adding/replacing at specific character positions. (btw, I am aware that iView is appropriate tool to batch rename once images have been included in catalog- looking to do some pre-iView renaming of early images).

Among the laundry list of renamers, I've seen the following- does anyone have any particular likes/dislikes, or preferred renaming tool?

- 123 renamer
- Better file renamer
- Bulk rename utility
- Flash renamer
- Namewiz

(Also know Breezebrowser and Imageingester do batch renaming- but are either suitable for images already in computer, rather than images coming out of camera/card?)

I don't know if this is a new site for anyone, but seasoft.com is interesting shareware site (some of these names were found here as recommended).

Thanks, Bill

Bill -

I used ImageIngester to rename thousands of files already on my computer.  It was easy to use and it was flexible. I try to keep things as simple as possible and use a minimum number of tools.

And a recommendation for BreezeBrowser - it has the best batch renaming I've seen.

If you regularly need to do certain renaming procedures, a good solution is an iView script. For instance, I've one that changes all extensions to lower case.

How does one set an iview script? I would like to be able to save settings for my batch renaming for lower case of my jpg extensions but not other parts of my file names. It would be nice to be able to do this without having to run the batch rename in iview more than 1 time to get lower case for jpg extension, then in capital case to get 1st letter of my name in the file names. I have also just downloaded my free upgrade to expression media, does anyone know how to do a script for the batch renaming for it?

For a Windows application, I quite like Bulk Rename Utility.

I also like to use DIM (Digital Image Mover) from www.alanlight.com/DIM/DIM.htm which is a java application that can also be run from scripts (such as MSDOS .BAT files).

I realize the thread is two years old, but I can put in votes for two freeware applications that I have used with good luck in the past:

Flexible Renamer
A little more capable, speaks Regular Expression.

Rename4U
A little more accessible.

Haven't used any of the DAM software yet to bulk rename, but these standalone freeware apps are very flexible.

Another handy tool for this sort of thing is the free 'FastStone Image Viewer' (http://www.faststone.org/FSViewerDetail.htm) - This will batch rename for you as well.

I would have to say that I have used - A Better file renamer (http://www.publicspace.net/ABetterFinderRename/) extensively in my work and I have found it to be an indispensable, powerful and inexpensive tool.

The same company also makes an application called the The Big Mean Folder Machine (http://www.publicspace.net/BigMeanFolderMachine/index.html), its a great tool for wrangling and restructuring folders.
