David,
I have not tried it, as I am a Mac guy. But it looks very good. Hert, the guy who writes it is on this forum and can answer questions.

Thanks Peter, I will look for his response. The difference is quite a bit so I would just like to know.
BTW, I am really enjoying your book. I have been through cover to cover 3 times now and am using almost everything like you talk about. Thanks for writing this book at this time. I was getting very concerned with all my digital images. I am a retired Professional photographer and have rooms full of negatives, and now starting digital (over 20,000) imaging and was worried that I wouldn't be able to find what I wanted when I wanted it. I was putting everything into folders like sunsets, flowers, mountains etc and the folders were getting very large. Any way, thanks

As a big fan of Peter's book I visit this forum daily. If you have questions about idImager or how to use idImager with Peter's procedures I would be more than happy to answer them.
Kind regards
Hert

Hello Hert
I was just wondering how your software compairs to Iview Media Pro. There is quite a difference in the cost of the software but the comparisons that I have read rate them about the same. Does Idimager do all the things that Peter talks about in his book?
Thanks for your time

Hello David,
I am not the one that should compare idImager with other products. What i can tell you is that IDI supports everything that Peter describes in his book. One unique feature of IDI is it's support for derivative files (multiple versions of the same image). Another unique feature of IDI is its support to extend XMP. This means that you can not only store "pre-defined" datasets (like IPTC4XMP) as embedded info in your images, but it also allows you to define your own.
There is a lot more to explore in IDI. Maybe the forum is a good point to start reading up:

Peter had some good things to say about IDImager (at least second-hand, based on what he had read and/or heard directly from the developer) in this thread, in which he conversed with the developer:
http://thedambook.com/smf/index.php?topic=32.0
It sounds like he chose not to evaluate it primarily because it is a Windows-only app.
I, too, am trying to decide whether to purchase IDIMager, IMatch (which is apparently on the verge of a major update; see
http://thedambook.com/smf/index.php?topic=208.0
), or iView Media Pro, so I would like to hear from anyone who has tried IDImager. The price tag certainly makes it more appealing than IVMP for a non-pro such as myself. It appears to be very actively developed; IDImager's developer seems to understand what photographers want and need (see the first thread above and the frequent updates listed on IDImager's web page). As important, he seems devoted to producing a product that achieves both.

Thanks steve. The information you posted was usefull. I would be interested to see if Hert was able to do the things to the DNG file the way Peter explained. I am playing with the idimager right now. Kinda confusing but still playing.

Thanks Hert for the reply.
I will look at the idimager forum. I guess the reason I am being so carefull about which program I use is I don't want to waist my time doing things that wont matter later with a different program.
I am looking at your program now. Don't really understand it yet so I guess I need to read the help files on it.
Thanks again

I've been using IDI for a few weeks now and like it better all the time. I've been an Imatch user for a few years but have always felt I didn't take advantage of its power because the interface was a little too complicated. IDI seems to be more intuitive and I think I'm using and understanding it much more than I ever could with Imatch.
I'm reading "The DAM Book" now and think IDI will fit right in with the workflow Peter describes.
Because IDI is new I and others have uncovered some minor bugs but Hert (the author) is always right on it within hours.

Hi Tom
Have you used Iview at all? If so how do you compair it with IDI?
do the rankings created in Bridge transfer over to idi and back?

Thanks for the information, Tom. I will download and try IDI this week.
Also, I realized there is another thread on this same topic here:
http://thedambook.com/smf/index.php?topic=215.0
We should probably continue on in one thread or the other, but not both, to avoid confusion. The above is probably better if only because it is in a more specific location (as opposed to General Discussion). That, and now anyone who looks here can link to the other discussion. I look forward to hearing from other IDI users and determining whether that is where I should spend my catalog software money.

Hi David,
No, sorry but I haven't used Iview. I looked at it but the price immediately put me off.
The rankings created in Bridge or IDI do transfer back and forth.

Today I have released idImager V3.1. This new release offers a performance boost, streamlined meta data integration to and from Bridge, enhanced scripting (search scripting, inline scripting, quick scripting), stored catalog groups, and more.

Hert, this sounds good, but I had a heck of a time downloading the software. Firefox didn't seem to work at all (although I was able to download the manual ok). FF would just spin forever. Finally had to switch to IE and that seems to have worked.
