I now have two D200s that I use interchangebly.  The cameras are set for continuous file naming rather than starting at 1 for each new format.  My naming scheme has been the date + the last 4 digits of the original filename.  The problem is that now I have some files with the last four digits in the 0123 range and the other in the 6789 range, so they don't sort in the order they were shot in.  I'm using Lightroom which has the ability to sort by capture time which solves this, so I guess my question is, is this really a concern?  Since one can search for an image by other meta-data, does the ending number of the filename really matter?

Probably not. After all, the serial number is in the Exif metadata and is shown in the Metadata Browser.
