hi there,

Chris Shain here - Sydney, Aus based arch/industrial/corp location shooter. long time reader of this forum and now first post, I'm a big fan of Peter's book and been plugging away slowly with the DAM business.

very basic question ............ I've beeen doodling about looking at IPTC standards on the controlled vocab website (also a terrific resource thanks Mr Riecks) - the word "caption" is used often within those standards and I certainly understand what that means.

however when I look at IVMP and bridge CS3, the word "caption" does not appear to be used at all. i've also looked at iptc_core_mapped .pdf, and it also has different things (I guess its not had a chance to update)

so ... in CS3 I assume that "document title" within iptc/iim/legacy,  and "description" within iptc core would be the equivalent of caption ??

In IVMP "description" is the caption equivalent,  or would "title" within annotations be the equivalent of caption ??

any comments greatfully received

Chris,
I think they are referring to description when they say Caption.  Headline would be shorter version, and Title would be even shorter.  I personally use the title field to store a backup of the filename, in case it gets changed by a client later on down the line.

thanks for the response Peter - I've done some more doodling, and can now answer my own question as well.  At the IPTC website    http://www.iptc.org/IPTC4XMP/    the downlodable pdf Schema for XMP goes through step by step each section. It's an interesting read.

page 9 - The IPTC content panel - "The Description field, often referred to as a “caption” is used to describe..............."

Chris,

While you're at it; the last section of that speci describes how the "old" IPTC fields are matched with IPTC4XMP properties. There you'll see that the Caption field maps to the dc:description field.

Peter, that is the way to do it. Unlike the misleading name of that field (dc:Title) the field is intended to be filled with *your* name of the file. Or as the specs call it:
"The title of the document, or the name given to the resource. Typically, it will be a name by which the resource is formally known"

Unfortunately many people use this field for a short description; which should in fact be entered in Headline (photoshop:Headline).
