I've been testing my import workflow with IFC as Peter suggested in the book, and on my Windows XP system, Bridge would not display the Preserved Filename entry in the metadata field. It continually showed as a blank entry. Tried Rank and File with the same result (still blank), although in looking inside the XMP sidecar, the original filename entry was clearly present in the XMP Media Management field.

I couldn't figure out why Bridge wasn't desplaying this metadata field, however; if I ran the Batch Rename routine, the previous filename displayed correctly.

After comparing the XMP results between running the Rename and IFC scripts, I found a small syntax difference. With Rename, the XMP tag was written as 'PreservedFileName' (displayed correctly - capital N in FileName) while in IFC and Rank & File, the XMP tag was 'PreservedFilename' (didn't display correctly - the letter 'n' wasn't capitalized in Filename). By manually editing the XMP sidecar file to have a capital N in the filename tag, I was able to get the IFC imported files to now show the previous filename in Bridge as expected. Once I found what was causing my problem, I went back and edited the IFC and R&F scripts to change all occurances of PreservedFileName from a lowercase to uppercase N and now the IFC renamed files are displaying normally.

I'm not certain if any other Windows users have encountered this same situation, but I thought I would pass this along in case you have problems with the preserved filename field.

Ron,
Thanks for the sleuthing.  I'll pass this along and see if we should be making a change to the script.

Sounds like this problem might be related to the hang-up problems with both IFC and R&F.

Dan

I didn't experience the hang-ups you reported, so I don't know if they are really caused by the same thing. With my problem, I also tested it on my son's PC and he had the problem displaying the filename, but we didn't have any crashes or hangs.

Good luck in getting your glitch resolved.

We are updating Rank and File.  The problem does not show up on MMac, but seems to on Windows.

As to the hang problem, I think that is a separate issue.  I'll be asking the Bridge team to check it out.
