When is an NEF not an NEF?

I have a Nikon LS5000 and am scanning my slides as 8 Bit NEF files with Nikon Scan 4.02 (latest) software. I obtain a parsing error when trying to convert to DNG using Adobe DND converter. Can I assume that the NEF file produced is not a Nikon RAW file as it comes from a scanner and not a camera - in other words, scanner NEFs are not camera RAW files?
Anyone else scanning slides to NEF? How do I get to DNG from the scanned file? If not what is recommended workflow solution for scanned files?

Richard,
The output from a scanner is not a mosaiced file, so it cannot be handled by applications that expect to see mosaic data.
This will get a lot more complicated when Nikon capture NX releases and will create NEF files from TIFFs and JPEGs.
I would save these as 16 bit TIFF files.
