Camera Scan Sample

I've posted a sample of a camera scan from a Nikon D2x.

It's a 35mm Tmax100 image.  We made about 900 of these in 3 hours.  It's been processed in ACR and saved as a DNG.

If you want to be convinced of quality, and you have a large format printert, amke a large print (I show a 24 inch print in my workshops).  It compares favorably to anything I made as an optical print in the darkroom from 35mm.

Was this from the attachment on p264 of the book? The Nikon ES-1?

Have you seen an equivalent for non full frame Canon ?

Yes, that was from that rig I made. (In the book, it's shown on a Kodak ProSLRN Full frame camera, but it also works on a D2x with a few modfications.)  The ES 1 gets the neg in the proper place, but the stage on the unit is pretty crappy, so I attached one from a Nikon PB1 bellows (I think the copier is called a PS-1).

Sadly, I tried the new Nikon PB6 bellows last night, hoping for an easy off-the-shelf solution, but it did not work with the D2x,(won't fit on the bellows without an extension tube, which screws up the magnification) and is still problematic with the D200.  I recently sold my 105mm micro lens which might work with either camera, but I don't have it to test with right now.  The 55mm and 60mm micro lenses don't work. I was able to frame correctly with my 85mm1.8, but quick tests indicate that it does not do such a good job at 1-1.5 magnification. (bad chromatic aberration when stopped down).

A full-frame Canon should be easier to find a suitable rig for, since there are a lot of existing slide copying attachments.

I'm surprised that finding hardware for this is so difficult. It could be a good opportunity for someone.

I picked up a manufactured unit (I think it's PhotoSpecialty.com?) and have tried it with my D2x and the 105mm. It's not doing the job yet. It doesn't pick up the whole image (I'm thinking the 105 is too long?), and I don't have a shorter fixed lens at the moment. The manufacture suggested something in the 100mm range but that could be with the 1.5 conversion factored in. I've tried to contact them to let them know what's happening but haven't heard back. I'd love to get this to work!

What kind of film stages have you found for doing camera scans with Canons?  I'm anxious to try some 14 bit, 21 megapixel  scans.

The prototype from Really Right Stuff has been shipped.  John Harrington and I are going to do some tests soon - hopefully next week sometime.

I have my 1DS Mark III and the 180 macro that I want to use. I know you think a shorter lens would work better, but the 180 is so sharp and it's the macro I own.

We could try to throw that into the testing mix.  I'm not sre if the rail length they are shipping will support that length of lens.

I think we'll find that a lens of that length is going to be problematic.
