Do you use the Convert to Linear Image setting

Peter,
Do you use the Convert to Linear Image setting? From the descripton it sounds as though it makes the image data camera-independent; which is what you would want for longevity...right?

Actually I see now in the book you say it defeats the purpose. Please explain. Thanks.

One reason is that choosing this option causes the DNG converter to save a demosaiced version of the image in the DNG file. Not only is the linear image much larger than the mosaic format one, it also negates any the possiblility of taking advantage of future improvements in the demosaicing process.

Thanks Rick. Looks like I need to educate myself a little more on demosaicing....not a term I'm familiar with, but I see Adobe has a whitepaper on the DNG format that discusses it somewhat. I'm also getting ready to start Bruce Fraser's new book, "Real World Camera Raw". I imagine he will probably discuss it as well.
