I'd like to indicate when my shots have model releases in my metadata. Is there a standard place for this? Special instructions?

Jim,

I created a custom field in iView called "Model Releases" where I store the models' names as well as the scanned model release forms.  This approach seems to work well and doesn't require catalog sets.

I also created a custom field called "Stock" that contains sub-fields called "Digital Railroad", Corbis, Getty, etc., and this is how I keep track of my stock images.

I did not realize that iView custom fields could contain any other than text information. How did you get the scanned release forms into the field?

Jim,

I take snapshots of my model release forms and catalog them as JPG's.  I just created a sub-field under "Model Releases" called "Model Release Forms" along with the names of the models.  I just drag my forms to that entry as well as to the models' names with their images.  Looks like this in the Organize Panel:
      Custom Field: Model Releases
                               John Doe                    5
                               Model Release Forms     3
                               Sally Joe                      6
                               Bob Smith                    9

I would add one word of caution regarding scanned model release forms:  Make sure you keep the original hard copy of the signed release in an easy-to-find filing system.  When the time comes that you need to rely on that release (usually in the case of a suit), a digital facsimile will not be looked upon favorably in court.  An original signature in ink on a piece of paper is what you'll need.

Based on the description in this document:
http://www.iptc.org/std/Iptc4xmpCore/1.0/documentation/Iptc4xmpCore_1.0-doc-CpanelsUserGuide_13.pdf
located on the IPTC website, You may be able to use the Instruction field and annotate it along with any other applicable information, perhaps...

Model Release: Yes/No
or
MR=Y/N

From the document referenced above:
Instructions [Instructions]
The Instructions field is a simple text field that can be used to include any of a number of
instructions from the provider or creator to the receiver of the photograph. Any of the following
could be included: embargoes (News Magazines OUT) and other restrictions not covered by the
“Rights Usage Terms” field; information regarding the original means of capture (scanning notes,
colourspace info) or other specific text information that the user may need for accurate
reproduction; additional permissions or credits required when publishing.
Note: This field is “shared” with the “Instructions” field in the Origin panel of the Adobe
Photoshop File Info field.

I may be wrong in my interpretation of this, but others may be able to shed light on this.
