Yes Peter I picked up on that iView/R&F missprint, but knew what you meant. I guess I probably should have said something so others wouldn't get confused....glad you found it and corrected it.

Just so I have this straight once and for all, if you use the iView Compatibility feature, iView will correctly assign labels for ratings 1 through 5 automatically at import time, correct?

R&F will update the Urgency field with the rating 1 - 5 as set by Bridge in the XMP data. Then, if you have iView setup like shown on p.203, it will reflect that Urgency field setting as colored label. Clear?

Your explanation is clear, however I have tried it set up like that and it doesn't work like that for me. No label is automatically set.

P.S. - Since it seems to work for you Dan, did you have to do anything else for set up?

Rick,
I haven't tried it yet, so I don't know. Maybe Peter will have some more insight into this. I'm getting ready to begin the migration to DAM this weekend, so I haven't even gotten to that point yet....sorry.

Dan - Sorry, thought you had. Looking at page 63 of the IVMP3 manual shows values mapped to the IPTC Urgency field, but there are only 3 associated values in #1, #5, and #8. Perhaps this is something that changed with version 3.

If you have iView Compatibility checked, Rank and File will set the IPTC Urgency field to a valuse between 0-5 that corresponds to your Star rating. You should be able to see this in the file info panel in Bridge after you run R&F.
Once you do this, you should be able to import these files into iView and see a label automatically assigned to the file. It will correspond to the Star rating only, and not the label rating.
If these files have been previously imported to iView, you will have to synchronize again, with "prefer file" rather than "prefer Catalog" checked.

When I run R&F, I get a value of "High" in the Urgency field for a star rating of 1.

Tried to no avail.......

They were, I did..... same result. Tomorrow's another day and I'll try again.

High actually equals 1, so Rank and File is working correctly. (Different versions of IPTC language is one of the current problems.) There are values 0-8, and Photoshop subs out a word for several of them.
As to why iView is not seeing the Urgency, I don't know. Can you set an iView Label? If you sync the ratings back from iView, and open it in Bridge, what do you see in the IPTC Urgency field? (Try several different labels).

I'll try a number of scenarios tomorrow. Too many cocktails, Stones and John Lennon DVD's tonight to concentrate on the task at hand. Thanks for the interest!

Thanks to everyone for their responses. I understand now, and I feel a little bit less stupid ... I guess I'm not the only one who doesn't quite grasp why two terrific pieces of well-designed software have such a yawning gap between them. Why did Adobe use "urgency," a deprecated field, for the flags? Why didn't the designers of iView, realizing this, allow for it? Just another example of "things that make me go hmmmmmm."

Bill,
It's not Adobe that uses the Urgency field, it's iView. Bridge uses the XMP data.

Peter - I tried to import files with 1 through 5 stars with same result - no labels are being set.

Yes.

The Urgency values remain as they were set by R&F.

Peter - If you assign a label in iView and then synch to Bridge, should the Urgency field have a value?
