I love the "buckets" idea in the book, but I couldn't work out an easy way to implement it in Windows XP without manually sizing each folder, etc--which would have been so tedious as to be prohibitive. But after some searching, I have found a program that works perfectly for the purpose and mention it in case anyone else who uses Windows is looking for something like it.

Archive Creator by PictureFlow will divide multiple files into whatever size "buckets" you specify. You can then have the program write directly to CD/DVD or to a folder on a hard drive. Some other neat features too like automatically generating HTML web galleries to burn to each CD/DVD. So far, I have found it works precisely as advertised. There's also a free 15-day trial.

Hi,

There's a JavaScript for iView Media Pro that breaks images into Sets of a predefined size: 700MB for CD or 4.7GB for DVD, etc.

http://www.iview-multimedia.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1567#5826

It's by Alex Havrylyuk who also wrote the freeware iImport for iView.

Archive Creator currently has an issue with some computers due to the PolyimagePro dll's it uses. Personally I'm not a great fan of apps that use Polyimage.

Robert,

to save me the experiment, do you know if this javascript will work on folders and not just files? For example if I have a collection of images partitioned into folders by shoot date, will the script grab as many folders as will fit into the predefined bucket size, and then start a new bucket? If not, then I suppose that I would have to flatten the directories into one larger folder and run it on that.

Cheers ... Alan

iView will show you the size of the currently displayed media, so you could create your buckets with iView.

pxlar8  -  Can you point me in the right direction to find how to do this with AC?  I have the product and have used it to create archive CD's, but haven't figured out exactly how to do what you're saying.  What I'd really like to do is be able to separate the images into separate folders and then be able to burn each folder to DVD with an HTML index for each DVD with only the images that are in that folder.

Hi Alan,

Good news and bad news. Yes this javascript can work across folders. So you could to  search and save the selection to a CD or DVD set. The bad news is this script doesn't appear to work with MediaPro 3 Sad. From the discussion with other iView users it appears iView have changed the way v3 handles scripts and need to update their object model and documentation.

Hi Rick,

I'm not familiar with Polyimage - what is it that you don't like?

Being careful not to slander PolyImage nor get out of my depth, apps I use that rely on it are much, much slower to render images. e.g. IMatch, Breeze Browser and PolyView itself. Switch color management off in these apps and the they appear to run at least twice as fast. Coincidence?

To balance my posts, PolyImage brings an immediate benefit to software vendors who license the code including ICC management and the option to read/write IPTC.

Peter, I don't quite see how to do this with Iview. Using Iview Media Pro (v 3.0.2) with OS X, if I select one image, I see its size in the upper right corner. In the lower left corner I see the catalog size, and total size of all media in the catalog. I don't see any display of selected images (ie, if I select two or more images, I don't see where it shows the total size of the selected images).

How would I use Iview to create buckets of DVD size?

I recently transferred a bunch of old CDs and DVDs with image files to a hard drive. I have a folder each for 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2004 (with no sub-folders--for 2003, I have over 15,000 images). I would like to create buckets for these, but I can't think of a way to do it that wouldn't involve lots of trial and error and time. It would be great if there was a Mac app that would create the buckets for me.

Jim,
select a set of images and in the lower left corner you will get a reading of how much space the media takes up.
