Keyword/metadata transfer utility
«

Hi,
Not sure if I'm posting this in the correct forum, but here goes....
I'm looking for a utility that will transfer the Keyword and/or other metadata information (of my choice) from one file to another.
For instance, lets say I have a fully decked out (meta data'd, keyworded, etc.) DNG file. I'd like a utility that would update my derivitive files with the same information. This need comes from a time when I wasn't a good boy and didn't automatically add all of this information to my files. Now, I've gone through a ton of old DNG files in Bridge and added the appropriate metadata and keywords. I have similarly named dervivative files (other than the extension) that I'd now like to update with the same information.
Anyone have any ideas?
Best regards,
Paul

Hi Paul,
Most catalog systems have this function in one form or another. iView Media Pro has a script called, "Copy from Items with the Same Name". If your originals and derivatives are catalogued in the same catalog but with only different extensions, it will copy the information across. Work with some test copies first.
Hope that helps,
David

There's also an iView utility called MetaSync that may do this for you. Last time I tested, I think I remember a bug, but maybe it's been fixed (that was a long time ago.)

I am reviving this thread because I, too, am looking for a utility (or script, or method) to transfer metadata information from one file to another.
I am in the process of testing out Fluid Mask, a sophisticated image 'cutout' application, also a Photoshop plugin. When this program is used, one can create "projects" (which I see as application-oriented work-in-progress files). When one has finished making the cutout (ie, finished with the project), the cutout is then saved as a PNG file. This file can be brought into Photoshop on a separate layer, and the cutout is incorporated into the Ps PSD file.
OK: I can see that I will be creating PNG 'cutout' files as I go along. I plan to catalog them in iView (which reads PNG and PSD files just fine). But: When Fluid Mask makes its 'project' files and also PNG files, the metadata from the original source file does NOT carry over. (Unlike Photoshop, where opening a jpg original, and then saving as a PSD file does carry the metadata).
So it looks like using Fluid Mask will leave me with PNG 'cutouts' that have none of the metadata from the 'source' file. I would very much like to transfer the metadata from a source file, and add it to the PNG cutout file.
Re previous posts in this thread: 1) the names of the original and the PNG will be different most of the time; 2) the metasync that Peter referred to is, I believe, synching between whole catalogs, so is not applicable.
I wonder, if there is not an application, if there is some sort of 'two step' process, where I could extract the metadata from the source file, and then 'apply' this extracted metadata to the target PNG file.
I have/use: iView, EM (have, not using), Photoshop, Bridge (don't use it much). I am on a Vista PC.
All ideas much appreciated.

Hi Bill
I think that the functionality that you require is available in IDimager.
What I use is the Versioning Feature, where I create the "edited" images as versions of the "Main and Keyworded" Image.
I then use the Casacade Metadat information to "copy" the data from the Main Image to all versions of that main image.
You can select what data to cascade, for example XMP and/or Ratings and/or Color Labels and/or ALL Exif and IPTC.
This can be done individually or for a batch/selection of images.
I hope this helps

Mike-
I appreciate the reply. This sounds encouraging. I will take a look at the iDi manual for further info.
By the way- which form of iDi are you using? (professional, personal, lite)
Thanks for the quick feedback.
