How to print contents of RAW disc in WORD...
«

I'd like to be able to print a listing of what folders are in my RAW discs. I try to follow Peter Krogh's DAM workflow. My photos are placed in folders with date and name of event:
RAW_028_060412
060309fhahJVgdhaven
060311fhahJV
060311FHAHjvWmichBulldogs
060322VBbanquet
060407Elliott13BD
060412EmilyFriendMisc
I think it would be beneficial to have a hard copy of what folders are in my RAW discs. Is there a way of doing this without have to type each folder name in WORD by hand? I can't figure out how to copy these folder names into WORD....
Thanks

Please excuse the doubling topic posting. I hit the post key for the first topic and it went to a blank screen and I thought it didn't get posted. So I tried again and the same thing happened....The system wouldn't allow me to delete my own topics.

Are you using iView? You could switch to list view and print that. Another way could be to copy the list view to Word. Or you could export the data as xml - I have a stylesheet that can make it look pretty.

Greg,
If the point of the task is to make a durable reference to what is where, I'd suggest that you simply burn a CD/DVD copy of the catalog periodically. Not only will it be much easier to create than the data export/Word file, but it will be 1000 times more useful if it is ever needed. It will not only be useful as a reference of the filenames present, but it will also show the images, let you see all metadata, compare against restored archive, etc.

John/Peter,
Yes I am using iView. I will try printing in list view. Thank you both for your responses. I'm having a difficult time with the cataloging method. I've been using different catalogs for each "event." I forsee difficulty in finding images in the future when I have to know the correct "event catalog and year." I am now trying to combine catalogs into a single main master catalog. I'm hoping this works for me.
It seems an undaunting task to then re-assign paths for each folder in the main and event catalog (I suppose I could just reassign paths in the event catalog and then merge it into the master catalog!!!). I realize a little (or a lot) of work now will reap benefits at a later time... In my mind (read, little experience) I was hoping to have a hard copy of what folders are on my RAW_... discs.
Thank you Peter, for a wonderful book and this forum. I mostly lurk, but every once in a while I have to ask a question. I've read your book and re-read most chapters and realize that without this forum I'd be lost. Happy New Year everyone...

Why are you having to do so much work when merging catalogs? What are your steps?
You should be able to merge catalogs, and have everything found as is. And you can always merge catalogs, and the run "find missing items". If stuff seems to be missing, then you can point the catalog at the drive(s) the images are on and tell it to search for the missing files.
You should not have to manually repoint each folder.

I put all my folders in RAW_036_061012 dvd discs. I then use lacie 500 gb external firewire drives to also place the RAW_036.. files. I then go into iView and import files from catalogs. I put all my different sports for the year in their own catalog. When that sport is done for the year I import (via Import Items>from catalogs) the catalog into the master catalog. Then I go to each folder and I have to reset folder paths. Yes this is very time consuming. I get the feeling (pleasant one too) that your going to tell me there is an easier
way...!!!?

Greg,
I don't understand what you mean by:
"place the files"
"import files from catalogs"
I also don't see why you need to reset folder paths.
I'd say:
1. Catalog files when they are in their permanent home, or
2. when moving files, do it with the iView.
Are you moving the files when you merge the images for the year?
Can you try to describe what you do with more precise language?

Peter,
I am being as specific as I can to help me remember my (!!!!?
) workflow, and
NOT
to be scarcastic:
My computer has 2 hard drives. (C and D). I use photo mechanic to upload my photos (mostly .jpg's, but have been doing some RAW, thanks to your book!) to my C drive with a backup goinjg to D drive. I use Bridge to verify and purge unwanted photos, add metadata (templates, and manually). I'm using imageingester to rename. I use photoshop (to the best of my limited ability!!!!) to enhance/correct. I do a lot of sports photography for my kids and others... So, I utilize iView to help with setting up catalog sets (grouping of different pics for different purposes!) and keywords for different kids. I want to be able to, in the future, when someone says, remember that picture from such and such with the goalie.....etc, I can find THAT picture.
OK, so now a particular sport/team is now done. I have that catalog (.ivc) file and all of its pictures on C (and D) drives. I put all of the pictures on DVD discs for backup. I also move the files to an external firewire (lacie) drive for backup. I delete the files on the D drive. I no longer need them. I have the DVD backup and the files are on the lacie external firewire drive.
I was hoping to have just one master catalog file with everything in it. If I had catalog files from every sport/event, I thought it would be difficult to find a particular picture. Thus, needing to know which catalog fille I needed to look in.!!!!! So I was importing the catalogs into the master catalog via (File > Import Items > From catalog file.) I suppose I should be using (file > catalog importers)
....
Now the catalog file in iView no longer recognizes the path to the file and so I go into iView and re-configure the path to the lacie drive. THe DVD discs I store at my office.
Delineating my workflow above, I can now see some flaws (OK a lot of flaws!!!) in this method. I will re-read the iView manual regarding merging, etc....But, I anxiously await your reply/recommendations....please be gentle.....Thanks

So the catalog thinks the images are on C, but they have really been erased and moved to D, right?
You can repoint the folder in the Catalog Folders window by right-click.
Or maybe you could wait to catalog until the images are on the D drive?
Is the folder structure on the C and D drive the same for the image files? If so, you just need to repoint the top level folder.
Does that streamline it any?

I use C drive as my working drive and D drive on my computer as my backup drive. I also use external firewire drives as my permanent drives (so I don't have to use my DVD backups!!).
You say repoint the folder in Catalog folders window by right-click.....can you be more specific?
Yes the folder structure is the same on C and D drives but, D is just a backup in case something happens to C drive. THe images that are on C drive are resized, manipulated, enhanced, etc. (at least some of them!!!). THus, I can't see waiting to catalog until images are on the external firewire drive.
Im just not sure of the correct method to repoint to the folder on the external drive.
Yes, you have made me "think" about my pseudo workflow, and Yes, you have streamlined it for me. Thank you for your time. I have work to do on it, but, by going through it with you here has helped. THanks for your time....
