OK, this should be simple, but I cannot find the answer anywhere. One of the supposed benefits of DNG is that there's a big jpg already embedded in the file. So, how to I get to that embedded jpg?

Doug,
The first requirement is to ensure that you actually save a JPEG preview in the DNG at the time of conversion from the original Raw file. This is an optional feature. The options are none, medium size and full size. Once created, if you then reopen the DNG file in Adobe Camera Raw and click on the Save button in the bottom right corner you will get the Save Options dialogue box. In this dialogue box, choose JPEG as the format selection.

Doug,
At the moment, only DAM software does this - iView, extensis Portfolio, idImager, iMatch.
As other software sees the utility of using these, it will become more common.

Thanks! My preferences were set right, but I didn't have the conceptual frame that could get me to the next step. It's the first time I've ever used that "save" button in ACR.

I'd make the DNG files with the DNG converter.

Doug,
I limited my original reply to ACR's ability to extract the JPEG, as I didn't know if you had any DAM software. However, if you do, then Peter's suggestion would normally be the better method. A catalogue app is usually the focal point of a well-structured workflow and you don't want to open additional apps like ACR if you don't need to.
