Dan -
Telling iView to update the folder will pick up new images or updated images. If you want to get the rating information that you updated in Bridge to be updated in the images you already have in iView you have to use "Sync Annotations" under Action on the menu.

Rick,
Thanks allot. That works. I had forgotten that Sync Annotations is also used to import.

However, it doesn't appear to work the other way. Bridge doesn't update when ratings are changed in iView.

Works fine for me both ways. I just took an image in iView, bumped it from 1 to 2 stars and synched back to Bridge - ok. Changed to rating back to 1 star in Bridge and synched back to iView - again ok.

Very interesting. Does not work for me. I even purged the Bridge cache and restarted Bridge....still doesn't work.

So, after you purge cache in Bridge and rebuild, you go back into iView and sync annotations from the original file and it doesn't do anything?

Rick,
I beileve I've discovered what's going on. This is only a problem with my CR2 RAW files. The JPEG's sync fine both ways. I do have to purge the Bridge cache sometimes to get it to update though.
It appears as though iView reads from the RAW sidecar files on import, but doesn't write back to the sidecar files in the same place or maybe not at all. So this must just be a RAW sidecar issue with iView, which doesn't really matter because iView and Bridge will probably sync fine with DNG's. And even if it doesn't, once my DNG's are cataloged, I don't intend to do my browsing with the Brdge anyway.

I'm using DNG exclusively now (actually had been before I read the book). I'm going through all my old ones now and converting them.
One interesting thing I've found though is that if I import my DNG files into iView and haven't applied any RAW settings yet and then go back into Bridge and update them, when I run update in iView to pick up the changes, it isn't updating the thumbnails. I have to delete them from my catalog and reimport.

Rick,
Are you sure that Bridge actually updates the DNG embedded JPEG and not just the sidecar file? I know ACR will update the embedded JPEG's if you set the options for it, but I'm not sure about Bridge. My guess is iView creates it's thumbnails for DNG's from the embedded JPEG's and not the sidecar files. You could try making your modifications with ACR instead of Bridge to see if it makes a difference. Peter may know what's going on here.

Dan - The DNG format doesn't use sidecar files - one of the advantages of using DNG - only one file to worry about, not two.

When you edit a DNG file in Bridge you are using the same ACR plug-in that is used in CS2. My preference for Camera Raw DNG is set to always update the embedded JPEG.

Rick,
I'm aware that DNG's have everything embedded and don't use the sidecar files, but I wasn't sure if Bridge was aware of that or not, and didn't create and use sidecar files anyway. I know iView uses the DNG's correctly.

No, Bridge does not create sidecar files for the DNG format. However, it will pick up information from a sidecar file if there is one present, for instance if you have a RAW file and its associated sidecar file in the same directory and they are named the same except for the extension, unless you specify in Camera Raw Preferences for DNG to ignore the sidecar files.
Have you tried updating your ACR settings after you've imported a DNG into iView and had the thumbnail update correctly? I'm fairly certain I have all the preferences, etc. set correctly but I still have that one issue.

1. Sidecar files contain instructions only. They do not contain previews (open one in a text editor and you will see what they are).
2. ACR hosted by Bridge is the same as the one hosted by PS. One set of preferences does both.
3. The DNG converter has ACR inside it. It respects your ACR settings when it creates a DNG file.

Peter - Do you have any idea why iView wouldn't pick up on changes to the DNG file in the preview? Have you heard of anyone else having this issue - I'm using the Win version so it might be an issue with that only and not the Mac. I'm probably going to post a question in the iView forum tomorrow.

Do you have the ACR preferences set to "always update" ?
Have you rebuilt thumbnails after you have updated the images?
