Thumnails for DNG files in Windows Explorer
«

I recently bought "The DAM Book". it is an excelent book. As it ,s advised in the book I decided to convert all my RAW files to DNG format.
But there ie a question of mine which I could not find it in the book.
All the DNG pictures are seen as thumbnails in the Bridge. But I cannot see the thumbnails in the Windows Explorer.
Is there any way that the thumbnails can be seen in Windows native system (in Explorer..) ?
Can you suggest.

Explorer does not know what to do with DNG's.
What are you trying to do with Explorer? If you're looking to create web galleries of your DNG's, the best thing to do is use the HTML gallery engine in iView. After a little initial configuring, it does all the work for you.

iView can do this. On mac, you choose Action>Set Finder Properties>Desktop Icons. It may be slightly different on Windows.
It's a very cool thing to change the icon from generic to representative. I hope the next version of Bridge is also able to do this.

If you can't see the DNG files' thumbnails in Windows Explorer, it may be because you are using XP Service Pack 2 which does not recognize the DNG files as pictures.
One way to resolve this is to install the Microsoft RAW Image Thumbnailer and Viewer for Windows XP which you can get from
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/digitalphotography/prophoto/raw.mspx
.
A quick alternative is to tell Windows that DNG files are pictures. See
http://www.earthboundlight.com/phototips/nef-windows-xp-sp2.html
(near the bottom of the page) for how to do this.

I'm not sure if anyone will spot this additional comment on an old thread, but for what it's worth I have just installed the Microsoft RAW Image Thumbnailer and Viewer. Contrary to John's statement, it does
not
seem to have any support for DNG files. It does, however, support the CRW, CR2 and NEF raw formats.

Does Windows know DNGs are pictures and not viruses? See
http://www.earthboundlight.com/phototips/nef-windows-xp-sp2.html
(near the bottom of the page) for how to do this.

John,
Is this working for you? No Windows box here, so no way to test.

Thanks for that, John. The registry hack at the bottom of your quoted link does indeed persuade Windows Explorer to display DNG thumbnails.
The bottom line seems to be that Microsoft Raw Image Viewer enables the viewing of CRW, CR2 and NEF thumbnails, while the registry hack enables the viewing of DNG.

The reg hack appears to work for DNGs although the orientation seems to be off.

DNGs employ soft rotation, meaning that the data is not rotated, there is a tag that tells the viewing application to rotate the file. JPEGs work this way as well.
