1  Software Discussions / Aperture / Re: Dead or Alive on: September 03, 2011, 12:44:45 AM
I regulary check the forum.

I primarily use Lightroom to organize and edit, but bought Aperture from App store with the great price reduction in January. Never gotten comfortable with it. Mainly because it sort of duplicates all photos when adding to library as referenced files. However, I'm still curious about it but I see that there is absolute no activity in the Aperture forum which leads me to believe not many are using it. Or are they just not here?

Anyway, got a warning that this thread - the most recent one in the Aperture forum - was at least 120 days old. Maybe I should have let it rest....

Aperture provides all the RAW conversion, image adjustment and DAM facilities in one application.

What are you doing to you image files outside of Aperture that would require you to synchronise updates to the items you have imported into Aperture?

Thanks to both for your replies. I guess there is no simple solution to my problem with the current version of Aperture.

Mark, what I mean is that if import "folders as projects" one day, and later want to import photos taken with a different camera the same day, that hadn't been downloaded yet. For example I don't download photos from my P&S every day, and when I do Photo Mechanic will put some of the pictures in a folder that has already been imported to Aperture. I still want all my photos taken on a certain day to show in the same project for that day. I will get the same problem if I download and import photos twice on the same day.

3  Software Discussions / Aperture / Organizing with Aperture 3 on: April 17, 2010, 12:51:40 AM

I have been using Lightroom as my main RAW-developer the last few years. For organizing I'm using a folder structure like this: 2010/2010M04/2010-04-15. All files are located in the folder for that specific date. I use Photo Mechanic for importing and renaming and very often have to use the "Synchronize Folder" option in Lightroom to update the files.

Lately I have been trying out Aperture 3 and are having difficulties finding a way to update a "project"/day ("Folders and projects"). It creates a new project for the day, which only holds the new files.  Is there a way to do this in Aperture? I can't see that "Projects and albums" work better?

Some may say I should stick to Lightroom since it does what I need, but there are a few things I'm not happy with and I would like to see if Aperture works better for me. So far I'm more happy with the outputs, but getting into trouble when I want to synchronize/update a folder with just a right-click or something that doesn't force me to create a new project and move the files around later. I have no plans to change my archiving system and still will use Photo Mechanic as importer and browser.

All tips are more than welcome!

I use Photo Mechanic to import and enter metadata and mostly Lightroom 2.3 for RAW processing. EM2 is used to catalog and browse my archives (prefer it over Lightroom for this job).

The LX-3 has caused me some "trouble". At first Photo Mechanic couldn't read the rw2-files so I couldn't use it to import and enter metadat. Then I bought a second laptop and chose a MacBook, which left me a new problem with the LX-3 and EM2. I don't use the Fuji raw converter.

Thank you both for your quick replies!

I should have noted that I don't use dng-files, but it seems that in this case this wouldn't matter much. Guess I have to wait for it to be supported or shoot jpgs with it. Love the camera but bought it mainly for RAW and small size (over G10), but in retrospective I wish I hadn't gone for a came with such a wide angle lens. Then I wouldn't have the lens barrel distortion problem to worry about either.

What do you do on Mac with RAW-formats that are not supported by Apple?

I have an Lumix LX-3 that I take snap shots with, buth although bot LIghtroom and Photo Mechanic can display these on my Mac, EM2 won't. I learned from Microsoft that Apple won't allow third party RAW-codecs, but why is Lightroom and Photo Mechanic showing them? It's not exactly a new camera any longer so what do other Mac users do? I haven't been using Mac for such a long time and I'm glad I'm still using Windows on my other computer.

7  Software Discussions / Media Pro & Expression Media / Re: Removing Keywords on: May 17, 2008, 01:38:18 AM

If the keywords are embedded in the file I think you have to export your new annotation fields back to the file. If not Expression Media will just reread the annotations from the file if you synch back from the file again. I've found the easiest way to do this from the Info pane since the selected files will "disappear" from your view once you remove the keyword in the Organize pane.

In addition you may want to delete the term from you keyword list, if you are no longer using the keyword at all.

8  Software Discussions / Media Pro & Expression Media / Re: Expression Media slow performance? on: March 27, 2008, 12:51:02 PM
I have all my files and the catalog locally. The program seems reponsive, but slow. I haven't tried timing the time it takes to show a picture but sometimes I wonder if I didn't click or scroll.

I like EM's clean GUI and really hope it will improve on the preview-time and searching. I just don't know what to expect and if it is only me that is expecting too much. Don't believe so, since the programs I mentioned above is working alot faster so EM should also be able to do so. Or?

9  Software Discussions / Media Pro & Expression Media / Re: EM 2 Beta Raw problems on: March 22, 2008, 02:45:42 AM

Maybe this question doesn't belong in this thread, but you mention there are other "private beta(s)" where problems have been fixed. Where do you sign up for more recent betas? When I'm working with betas I like to use the most recent one since bugs in earler version often cause me to stay away from using it enough to discover other bugs.

If you have a link for these betas or can tell us how to sign up for them, that would be greatly appreciated! Right now I hate it that it takes several seconds for EM to show a previews and it looks like this newer beta doesn't have that bug.

10  Software Discussions / Media Pro & Expression Media / Expression Media slow performance? on: March 21, 2008, 04:07:24 AM

After I got the DAM Book I played around with, and finally bought, Iview Medi Pro. I guess I didn't follow one of the advices in the book very well, since I found out too late that Iview wasn't quite what I hoped it to be - it felt slow. Then came Expression Media and I sort of put IMP/EM on the shelf, waiting for whatever changes MS would do.  Last week I downloaded and installed the EM2 Beta, as I was anxious to see any changes. I also have a new computer with Vista Core2Duo 2,0 Ghz and 4 GB of RAM, and was hoping for better performance.

To my disappointment it's still so slow. Searches takes ages (well, at least a minute to search through 20 000 photos). Why is searching in ACDSee so much faster (instantly) when they both have indexed all the photos? Even Lightroom which I see a few complain about its sluggishness is ten times faster than EM.

Browsing the photos is also slow (be it NEFs or JPGs). It's a little faster if I let it build previews first, but still too slow for my taste.

Is it just me and my expectations or is IMP/EM slow? When browsing my photos I rather use ACDSee, Lightroom or PhotoMechanic. What should I expect when it comes to searching the catalog - shouldn't it be as fast as other DAM software?

11  Software Discussions / Lightroom / Not using xmp on: September 30, 2007, 01:35:31 AM
Usually I add metadata with eiter IView or PhotoMechanic but recently tried to add some in Lightroom. In stead of embedding the IPTC info in the file itself (NEF) it added an xmp-file. In the setting I have not checked the box for updating xmp.

How do I make Lightroom embed the IPTC info into the file and not use sidecars?

Thanks in advance
