1  DAM Stuff / Backup Strategies and Tools / Re: Thinking of dropping dvd backups - not sure now about bucket strategy on: August 23, 2012, 12:44:20 AM
Hello, had similar thoughts a few months ago and by the look of it I am using a similar work flow with 4.3 ish folder buckets, which fit nicely onto the DVD.

After much though here was my decision, for what it is worth!

Do not regard the DVD as a backup.  They are an archive.

Backup means you up update and keep fresh the backup daily.  Archive is a onetime archive done when a 'bucket' is full.

Looking to the future, Blue Ray will be how big a bucket (that is my next step and replace the DVDs) and what will come after that, even bigger 'archive' storage without a doubt.

My final decision, think archive and backup and keep both - just in case!

Look good; but would welcome some comment and feed back - just downloaded and will give it a try!!

3  DAM Stuff / Naming Issues / Re: Including date in filenames on: September 01, 2011, 12:21:28 AM

I agree totally with Bob; but the 'date' is not really used as a file name, the date is used (yymmdd-####) to ensure an inique 'file name' for every image -- if I am looking for an image taken on a specific date I still use the date metadata

Ensure you build all your new folder structure, once you have changed to .DNG, within LR; then LR will find the folders and your 'new' folders - I had a similar issue a few ysers ago and did the 'new folder buiding' in windows then LR could not find the images.

As an alternative - YYMMDD_001.etc  Is the hour and minute so vital?

I take you do a full keyword routine?  Why use folders and not a Smart Collection?

I went over the same issue, have a look at Smart Collections, 1000s iof images and no scroll bar and tghey all update at every import!

By the way the scroll bar goes on for ever!!

Matt

Yes I definitely have everything fully key worded. I'll take a look at the smart collections, which sounds like it may well the answer. Smart folders have existed on the Mac as part of the OS for a few years now but I have just never used them. Perhaps I am missing something major here.

Spend some time and have a play, Smart Collections also help sharpen your Keywording.

To give you an idea of Smart Collections, just imported some 1100 images, basic key word at upload, Smart Collection now shows me all images that have not been set Keepers/Deleters, second round of Keywording (invividual image level) and any that have not been edited via Develop -- so plenty of work for me in the next couple of days!!

Thanks

Ashley

9  General / General Discussion / Re: Derivatives, folders, Lightroom, and ammunition...... on: March 11, 2011, 01:54:24 AM

Hi

I have had the same thought many times, but still stick with the DAM Principles, but modified for my workflow needs and work style, but the principles still stand.

When in doubt I go back to a sytem that worked for years .... film and negative.  Your .dng (which is a beter file sytem than RAW and future proof) are your negatives - every thing else is a print/print-file so a derivative of the negative - did you store your prints and negatives together in the same ring binder?

Derivative folders save me loads of time;  someone need that file again, byt in CMYK, as a TIFF, for the web etc or another set of prints it is their ready for sending or printing, east to find and time saving which is a DAM Principle and seperate from the .dng or the original or negatives.

Trust me you are right, do not feel any pressure to go back to the darkages - your system is future proof!

Zoltan

I do the same sytem as you and like you then have 'gaps' in the number system - but it has no issue with me, it did bother me when I first used this system, but my workflow numbers before I delete the poor/bad images - the alternative is as suggested sort then re-number

OK now had time to have a play and John's point are the way forward, management of ALL images in One catalog - then use sesible metadata

Many thnaks
12  Software Discussions / Lightroom / Re: Lightroom - Moving Images to A Catalog on: January 12, 2011, 11:19:28 AM

John

I can see your point in this and the logic, saves a lot of work across each catalog

The issue I always have is how do I not corrupt the metadata?  On all my commissioned work (images not free to send to library) can I put COMM in the meta data - if so where would your recommendation be that in which metadata field

Plus if I use the method suggested by Bill will I not only import the image and loss any develop done in the other catalog

Thnaks fro that, I was looking at 'moving' the collection from on-to-the-other catalog - never thougfht about reimporting the images - will give it a go
14  Software Discussions / Lightroom / Lightroom - Moving Images to A Catalog on: January 12, 2011, 02:37:24 AM
Hello All

Using LR3 and want to do some serious tidying of images; basically I have images in one catalog that should be in another.

It is easy to make a  selection or make a collection of the images I want to move, but once I have done this can I add that collection/selection to a different catalog - easy to create a new catalog but can I add to an existing catalog

In summary, can I move images, as a collection or selection, from one catalog to another existing catalog.

In anticipation, thanks for your help

Must agree why have twice the work with two sets of images when you can generate 'as and when required' for clients
